I have a question, when it comes to direct connections.

Xbox live uses Ethernet connection right?

Well my modem uses USB to connect to my comp, so does that mean i can have my ethernet and usb running at the same time?

Or am i juat being stupid cause that was what a router was invented for?

I knew i went on HND in Computing for some reason.

Other people should be on the forums later in the day, but for now I'll try answer.

The only connection you can make to Xbox Live without a pc is called a direct connection, using this connection you use a broadband modem connected to the Xbox, and you enter the details like your Internet Service Provider password, username etc into the Xbox Live settings.

If in the future you want to share broadband with your PC then you need a router connection.

The best info is here http://www.xboxlive.com/en-GB/live/start/connect/

Connecting without a PC does not in any way effect the quality of the service you get, just means you are limited to a direct connection.

Has anyone made connection to xbox live without using a p/c. If so is there a change in the quality it may be a while before my p/c is up and running. what would be the best modem to buy?

It's okay to buy what they think will work, as long as they agree you can return it if it does not.

Depending on where you live, the best thing to do is to take it into a Special Reserve store and pay for them find the fault, Special Reserve are easily the cheapest when it comes to fault finding, failing that a local computer store. If you're not too experienced when it comes to messing around with the innards of a PC then its best to let others do it as you could damage more stuff. Whatever it is it sounds like it'll require a replacement part of some kind, it may be an idea to post in the PC forum for help, as a lot of knowledgeable people are in there and don't post elsewhere.

Assuming you get the PC up and running one day, the best connection type for you is a router connection, that way your PC can use the internet and your Xbox can

http://www.xboxlive.com/en-GB/live/start/connect/router/ shows how you can do this, I bought a Zoom ADSL X4 router from PCworld for £99.95 and it works fine. The cable used here is RJ45 cable which is straight through.

To be honest, if you're not sure of how to go on, the best thing to do is to go somewhere like PC World, explain what you want to do to an assistant, and see what they come up with. That way if you get all the kit home and it does not work you can take it back to them, whereas if you buy online of from somewhere like Macro you cannot. To be able to take the stuff back you HAVE to make it clear that you are buying it to use with Xbox Live.
