Did anyone else see Watchdog the other day??? If you didn't and you use BT Internet Anytime (like me) this may interest you.

All the high usage users (me included, of course) were recently given a new number to dial up, ending in 004 instead of 001. I changed to this number and discovered it was absolute crap. I mean really bad. Most of the time I can't even connect, and when I do it drops regularly and is very slow. I sent them a complaint and and carried on, putting up with it. It isn't on, I pay £15 a month to be able to use the internet when I want, and they are giving me what they promised. So I watched Watchdog the other day and apparently this is all a big BT scam. BT are giving all the high usage users this new number to put them off and make them think "This is crap, I'm getting Broadband." and then they make a fortune. Well, I want Broadband, but I ain't gettin off BT! Stuff them

Ah well, just my rant for the day.

It's not really any less secure than a dialup...your IP address does change, just not as often (unless you buy a static IP), and you can still just set up a firewall box, or even just a piece of software. I've never had any problems with attacks, and I've had cable here since February.

Broadband is high speed always-on internet access, in the form of cable modems or DSL (usually adsl) lines. Speeds in the UK are between 512kbps and 2mbit (I think...does 8mbit satellite access qualify as broadband?), but its penetration is still reasonably low. Most people use dial-up access via NTL or BT, often making the assumtion that broadband is too expensive...although it's only £25 for NTL cable - on top of the basic £8 package.

The speed is most noticeable when downloading..I'm only only 512kbps, low end as far as broadband goes, but download speeds regularly surpass 70k/sec. Online gaming is great, just playing Counter-Strike with pings of around 40ms, as opposed to 200-300ms on dial-up.

Like I said, the number of people with broadband access is much lower in the UK than some other countries (notably America and Germany), to the point where the USA is pushing technologies beyond broadband - I was reading about a plan to get Gigabit (1,000,000kbps) internet in to every house in Canada by 2005, and Terabit (1,000,000,000kbps) in schools/government institutions.

Are these kinds of speeds really nescessary? Nope, nothing we can create at the moment demands speeds such as these, but it's certainly future-proofed. Most LANs are a fraction of this speed, remote access and communication would become much easier, and file transfers instantaneous. I was using a friend's shell in Holland, connecting to a box in London and getting pings identical to those on my LAN (if not faster), and transfer speeds in excess of 600k/sec.

I'm going to enjoy having a box on a Gigabit line, theoretical download speed of 125mb/sec...it's held up by the server at the other end.

Nice.

Well, at least the acheaved the first task, making you think it's Crap.

I use the BT Surftime with Freeserve, £5.99 a month for off-peak time, and that still works well, maybe give them a try.

So whats with broadband??? What is it really?
