From the list of console add-ons over the past gaming decade, do you know how many have actually NOT flopped?!
NONE... they're all crap. The Mega-CD, the 32X, 64DD, etc... they've all been crap. Okay, so admittedly Sony haven't had a shot yet, but is it worth it? I believe history can only repeat itself again, and with the HDD bringing little more than the oppotunity for patches (wrong road to go down!) Sony must have a secret advantage brought about from the HDD that we know no of!
People want a console... just one box, however big, fat, small of thin... having add-ons, like the HDD, can only take up more room where it isn't needed! And plus.. with more and more games becoming multi-playform, you think developers will spend EXTRA money on making the game HDD-compatible when then can do a straight port when only the PS2 is utilized?
The HDD, as 'useful' as it may be dubbed, will merely add quicker to the inevitable demise of the soon to be defunct PlayStation 2.
The Gamecubes 'Upgrades' fit INTO the bottom of the Gamecube... nothing sticking out the side... Playstation owners will no longer be in the position to call the X-Box big...! Gamecube owners however!
As bias as you may be (Bonus :D), you have to see the large down-side of the HDD; add-ons have a terrible past record. I fear the HDD will experience the same fate as the 'others'!
Thoughts?
1. As has already been mentioned, only the first Japanese machines require an external HDD. For the rest of the world, the HDD slots inside the PS2. The new Japanese machines are the same.
2. The HDD and online adapter (56k modem and Ethernet adapter) is a seperate unit from the HDD, clearly indicating that you do not need the HDD in order to go online.
3. Add-ons such as this in the past have failed due to lack of meaningful support. This will not be the case with the HD in either the PS2 or the Xbox, as both companies plan to push it significantly - and not purely for games. In fact, it is quite possible that multi-platform titles developed to use the HD will not make it to the 'cube. (Unless the 'cube is to have a HD - I honestly don't know.)
4. Several major games from several major developers will contain online capability, including Final Fantasy and Tony Hawks 3 to name but two. Developers have said that they will produce online titles once Sony has successfully completed test.
5. Sony have the knowledge, knowhow and support to make both products viable and worthwhile, along with big names signed up to provide software and services.
I think some people are feeling a little insecure recently, hence the attacks on PS2 and Xbox, rather than simply publicising the 'cube.
too many, especially since you don't know what your talking about, The HDD slots INSIDE the English PS2 with the modem hanging on at the back.
The Japanese version is the one with the external drive which is oviously the one your mistaken with :D
and finally........hmmm nag flabit im all lost for words
> THe PS2s fan is pritty loud anyway.
A friend of mine has seen a GC and said that it was louder than the PS2. Dosn't matter really does it? Once you connect it to a surround sound system you don't hear it.
What does get me is you go on about how all add-ons were crap, and how, without any decent evidence you go on about the hard drive being annoying and useless, and then say:
"Oooh, but the GameCube's add-on actually fit inside the console!! Oooh! Even though I have no evidence whatsoever, it's still obvious that the GC add-ons will be great, and the PS2's crap! Yeah!"
Okay, so maybe not that exactly, but it sounds like it to me. I'll leave this to Bonus I think though, I'm not a technical gamer. I'll just continue insulting the GC's poor Japanese launch and the rather poor selection of games being released for it. :D
