Today, I stongly believe I have played the best PS2 racer to date:

Extreme G III

The graphics in this game are amazing. The detail and imagination used around the tracks is ace. Have you see the bridge on the second level?! Amazing! The developers (Acclaim?) seem to have used the shining particle effect (ala 'Celda') to act as the regeneration 'rivers' that regenerate your ammo and boost power - ala F-Zero.

Now, being quite critical of the first and second incarnations of the EG series, I really had to swallow my pride. I spent about 45 minutes playing this game, 45 of my minutes that I actually enjoyed playing a PS2. Don't get me wrong, the PS2 has pro's in abundance, but for people who are quite reserved in their praise of the PS2, this is the game that will break the silence!

The sheer speed of the game is enough to get you going... when you boost you feel like you're travelling at a million miles an hour! If it weren't for the A* control incorporated the game would be uncontrolable! What excited me was the prospect of the Gamecube version. I know there is one. With the PS2 version you can turn in three ways. The 'D-Pad', 'R1' and 'L1' and the 'Analogue' pad. And if you notice, you can use either the Analogue and the D-Pad for a 75% turn then add the extra turn by using theshoulder buttons.

Have you noticed the GC shoulder buttons. they're like triggers... pressure sensitive - imagine how much control you'd have over the bikes in the GC version. I believe the GC version will be better, but only because of this.

I would seriously reccommend this game to any owner of a platform that hosts this game! I really do think the game is one of the best around! It's just a shame it'll be over shadowed so many big names like PIKMIN, Luigi, SFA and Melee. Not to mention MGS2, DMC and so on.

Take a look anyway, it's a wikid game!

There's no about about it, the PS2 has more than it's fair share of racers. I suppose, in the same way the N64 was dubbed 'The King of Platformers', the PS can have the Racing crown, I mean the GT series could probably clinch it, then you have ridge racer, wipeout, extreme g, not to mention all the 2nd rate titles.

There is something about playstations... they seem to be more of an ornament... most causal gamers have one, and then only play it when their mates come round... most only have skate-boardin' and football games.... and the odd wrestling title.

I still like racing games... and hopefully, provided the Gamecube can impress, more and more
developers will join bringing more racing games to the GC although we'll have EG3, DKR, Road Rage... etc

Game

Did you know?

The Powerpuff Girls are coming to N64 AND Gamecube! I wonder if the amoeba brothers are playable.. :D

Erm, Jez, the PS2 shoulder buttons are pressure-sensitive as well. Try them.

There is something special about them though... racing games.

You can have a character on the screen in a fighter and leave the pad alone, you can have Mario or Sonic on the screen and leave the pad alone, but what you can't do it see a GT3 car, an Extreme G bike or any other fast racer machine on the screen and leave it alone... you're just itching to smack the X button and fly off, leaving a lovely trail of smoke.

Racing games are cool, and with the diversity of them nowadays, what with mario Kart, Extreme G, GT3 and other games like Pod-Racer and Wave Race, I really do feel that the racing genre has quite a lot going for it!

I actually think Extreme G III is one of the best PS2 games currently available - Everything from the gameplay to the graphics and music is class!! The best bit is when you break the speed of sound and the screen goes all blury!!
This is definately a must have for all racing fanatics and it looks like Wipeout Fusion has a lot of work to do to better this!!

I really would like this game, but I am exceptionally poor at the moment (starting a new job, and currently going from one wage to another).
