Subdomains...well, say you owned the domain games.net, and added a subdomain called ps2, the full address for the subdomain would be ps2.games.net. It's another word that you put before your domain name, which can be used to redirect to another area of your site, or an entirely different hosting location - the most common one being www.

It can either redirect to a CNAME or an A record in your DNS zone file, depending on where you want it to point to, and they're often used to either offer hosting to people using your domain (bobssite.games.net, for example, which you could give Bob for him to use), or to organise your own site in to sections (news.games.net, forums.games.net, irc.games.net and so on).

Erm, I'm not too afraid to say this, but, umm - what ARE 'subdomains? :-S

Lol.

I'm afraid I'm not much of a internet wizard/computer wizard - if that's what you call them. ;-)

Shocktrooper - off to bed now.

I don't think you can emulate subdomains in JS. The only thing you could do with JS is the redirect type thing that you could do in CGI or PHP, based on the ENV variable passed to the page. But that's all only possible if Freeola make subdomains (even if they only point to the home directory) available.

So, for now mate, guess you'll have to get used to mydomain.com/whereever for a little while.

Though what you want can be done in javascript, I'm just not to sure how, I'll look at all the ones I have, as I'm sure I've seen it before..... I'll let you know.

Only think I suggest is signing up with multiple accounts, but then you can't have your own domain on each, you'll have you use the Freeola ownd ones... freeola.net for example. So if you signed up to three accounts you could have three sub-domain style sites:

forum.freeola.net
chat.freeola.net
guestbook.freeola.net

..though soudsn like more trouble that it's worth.... stick with Sub-Folders

It would require rewriting the dns scripts and databases. A lot of work and at present Freeola has other major projects on the go. I carn't say much but we will soon be expanding the type of service we offer.

That's fine, and would be helpful for our own domain names. Could it be made possible for domain names bought through freeola? Then a simple bit of PHP or even JavaScript could take you to the relavent page.

hhmm... Well, I guessing Sub-Domains don't work with your own Domain Names, only with ones which Freeola own...

... thinking about it, makes sence.

So, if you register a Domain Name, you can only get to it through www.thedomain.com but if you create an E-mail address with a Freeola registed Address, you wil then have a vailable the bit before the @ and then the domain...

...e.g. [email protected] = http://steve.freeola.com
[email protected] = http://chris.WWFFANS.co.uk

A Sub-Domain will be created when you add an E-mail Address to your account. For example, if you create, [email protected]
you'll then also be able to access your site through bill.mysite.com

...Still, this will just take you to your index page, so it's best to advertise the www.mysite.com version.

I just tried a random subdomain on my site, and it just came up with a DNS error. If Freeola set up their DNS servers to accept certain subdomains, it's easy to write a redirecting script to a subfolder.
