One of the questions that plagues my life this, “why is Britney so fi…..” oh sorry, wrong question. What I meant to say was, “should games have more than one genre? “Someone call the men in white coats” I hear you say. *No! Dear god let me explain!* What exactly do I mean??? Well listen up and I will tell you.

Have you ever for example, been playing a first person shooter and thought, “heh! That car looks cool, driving it would be cooler though”? If you say you haven’t you are probably lying, delusional or both! If truth be told I bet we would all love for a game like this, a FPS where you could hop into a car and seamlessly enter a racing game.

This is something that has never been done, seamlessly joining two game genres, without having separate levels or sub games. After claiming this I am probably going to get a lot of stick and examples from you lot, but if you think long and hard you will probably find I am right…..either that or the words Falcone: Into the Maelstrom, Bounty Hunter and X-Box have just come out of your mouth *typed by your fingers*.

For those of you who haven’t been informed, Falcone: ITM and Bounty Hunter are two very similar games, both being released on X-Box, the former on Ps2 as well, the latter X-Box exclusive. Falcone: ITM is being developed by Point Blank and Bounty Hunter by Warthog. Its amazing that both of these revolutionary games are being developed at the same time, but also being revolutionary for the same reason.

Revolutionary??? Why? Well if you read the title or this far you will know that these games are obviously cross genre. Which two genres though? FPS and Space arcade shooter. The two games obviously have different storylines, but they have the same basic premise.

Both games are FPS/Space arcade shooters that seamlessly join the two genres. Take for example you are flying your ship into a space station, people inside could start shooting at your ship. You now have two options, land your ship and blow them sky high or you can take them out using the guns mounted in the ship. The more ways to kill people the better I say.

So why is it that this two genre game thing has only just come about? Well if you look at the formats of the games I would say it is because of technical limitations. In what way? Well its mainly due to the fact that both parts of the game have to be running at the same time. If this wasn’t happening, when you left your ship the next section would have to be loaded in, ruining the whole concept of the two games.

Now obviously I can’t say whever the two games I have mentioned will be any good, you never can be certain, but if they are I can see a market opening up for this type of game. So the question I ask you is, “Do you think that this type of game has the potential to be a success?” I know I do, but do you?

Of course it does, it has done before. Could you really say that Deus Ex is a FPS entirely and exclusively? Do you not recall that there are many RPG elements such as character development, multiple choices as to doing the good or evil and some character interaction. Yes it is to a lesser level than the usual RPG but it doesn't change the facts, it is a first person game with shooting (or just hand to hand if you like, though you'd have to be quite skilled, especially when dealing with robots) and RPG elements. So it's more like a FPRPG. Other games have even blurred genres, take Black & White, it's difficult to class. We have a RTS, resource managment, building cities and the like but then you have this totally different factor that is your creature. You end up with a whole new thing of teaching your creature to do your bidding, looking after it and generally trying to have fun with it. Then there's the choices of good or evil, the quests which are similar to those done in an RPG. You essentially develop your god personality into an evil vengeful god, a good helpful god or try to keep a balance and then you have your creature to develop into one of the same but a down to earth creature instead of a god. Though your creature can do pretty much everything you can, it is restricted in reach and can't move as fast as you. Then there's the fact that there are no troops and no battles which you would usually expect in an RTS. You must either impress other villagers by either being violent or by helping them depending on your preference or you can attack them and wipe out the villages, either with the intention of building a new village yourself or with the intention of having some of your villagers inhabit the empty village and begin rebuilding it. Quite what this comes under I'm not sure and while it is strategy of a sort it certainly is an original method.

Genre crossing games have been around some time, there have always been a few that you just couldn't place. More and more nowadays games are giving you increased freedom which will allow you to utilise more than one clear cut genre type in the same game. Grand Theft Auto 3 is intended to be a first person game, moving on from the original as has been hoped. This means that you will be able to move around in 3D, first person doing what you would have done in the last two before moving into a car and continuing from the drivers seat. This is the same as has been done before but it may be more noticeable, perhaps they will even allow you to use different perspectives so that you can be first person on foot but third person in the car or the other way around. As I said, in previous games you could actually go around on foot and fight from there before going into a car which will require a slightly different playing style. The main difference of GTA 3 will be that it will be just like your idea of going around fighting in a FPS type game before moving into your car and playing what is a driving sim the likes of a mixture between Carmageddon, any racing game and Driver. Of course such ideas are being made for other games. Mafia is a game that intends to allow you to walk around on foot and even enter buildings in a real time seemingly "living" city. You can then get into a car (yours or not) and take that around town or use it to get a job done. This is essentially giving you the freedom that people have often dreamed of in games. With advances in technology of games even more freedom may be possible allowing you to do pretty much anything a real person could. We're almost there allready.

I think we can look forward to many new varieties on the old genres and we may even have to come up with some new ones as more and more original and varied ideas arrive. Of course we must never forget that a game can be good even if it doesn't incorporate a mixture of genres or styles and while this is something that could stand to make a game better it does not mean that all games will need this sort of thing. Originality comes in many forms and a good game is a good game regardless of how new the ideas are as long as they are used well we should still be able to enjoy.
