OK, I’ve been away for a while so my first topic for ages will be a (yay) console wars topic!

As you all know, I’ve never liked Nintendo, for lots of different reasons. However, there’s always been another reason that I’ve never told you, because I couldn’t quite place it. Well, now I know what it is.

Nintendo have no style.

The first seeds of enlightenment were sown a couple of weeks ago when some twonk said the GameCube packaging was so much better than the PS2’s (as if we really care). When I looked at the packaging I thought:

“God, it looks so loud and tacky. It’s too OTT and Japanime.”

Finally, I realised when I was reading an article on the contents of the PS2 box in the OPS2 Special Issue #1 (God knows why. Actually, I don’t know why even bought it. There was some blatant cut ‘n’ pastery going on). It said, and I quote: “Inside the PS2’s minimalist packaging…” That’s when it hit me, as to why I like Sony so much better. Nintendo have no style whatsoever. The N64 and GameCube have very in-your-face designs. The still look like consoles made for kids instead of entertainment systems. This could be one reason why Nintendo fails to appeal to the trendy generation. The games are pretty much the same as well. There are a few exceptions, such as Extreme-G and WipEout 64, but the latter doesn’t count.

Sony, however, has style by the truckload. Sony in general as a company is ultimately cool. Most people have a Sony portable audio device of some sort, because apart from being very high quality, they are always very stylish. The design always keeps up with the current trend, even their bloody laptops look the business! The games always scream sleek as well. You only have to look at WipEout, GT and G-Surfers to realise this. Almost every game on the PS2 that’s any good is groovy in some way. SSX has some very cool moments, as does GT3 and ZOE. It’s just the PlayStation way.

In fact, a lot of people would have heard before the phrase “PlayStation culture”. The PlayStation comes with its own lifestyle. What other console would have a section on the perfect audio and visual set-ups, with advice on speakers, DTS systems and televisions? Exactly. Hell, there was even a PlayStation gig set up by Sony recently. They have these parties all the time, and the kinds of people that turn up are not just industry journos and FantasyMeister, but proper clubbers as well. Sony has managed to capture the heart, not only of tradition and hardcore gamers, but the new generation of trendy Ibiza dance-slaves, by making even videogames look cool.

This is what I wrote in Strafex's post:

Games' developers love the GC because of it's fantastically easy developing kit. The GC motherboard has been specifically designed for the quickest, most easiest and inventive developing experience available. That's simply the reason why so many Developers fancy the GC for their utter most concentration. Not only can they convert their ideas quickly and easily onto the Gamecube and work from then on with no fuss - but they can then produce a game that is easy to play that will result in portraying superb graphics.

For example, Shigeru Miyamoto took around 3 years to complete the Zelda engine and game - but with this new Zelda, it took him about 3 months to finish the new engine that the game will run on - and he has the rest of the time to work on the in-game stuff! He can finish the game (that will end up twice, or maybe three time as big as Zelda) in under half the time it took for Ocarina Of Time - that is the power of the Gamecube.

To be truly honest, I think Nintendo are dominant in the console departemnt when it comes down to entertaining, good-looking and utterly playable and addictive games. They just never seem to put a foot wrong when they release a new game with new ideas. Zelda OOT was absolutely superb and was voted by many as the best game ever created - I am close to agreeing.

Soon enough, you will all see that the Gamecube will be the console that everyone wants and it will be the console that will revolutionise the gaming industry - what with its innovative mini-discs. It is a cube for heavens sake! That has never been done before. It has four controller ports for a stunning multiplayer experience. If the N64's multiplayer entertained so many with it's 64 bit graphics, then I cannot wait for the multiplayer madness that the Gamecube will bring.

All in a small-sized cube, eh? Marvellous, bloody marvellous :-)

Thank you.

However, that doesn't really come to the point that you're trying to make - which is completely false.

Nintendo have no style? Of course they do. You're the one that keeps on saying that they seem to have a 'kiddie' image: that's a style, Nintendo's style. Although that’s a purely harsh, pathetic stereotype. I don't agree. A kids' game is something that will be easy to play and complete - Nintendo's games might seem 'kid-like’ in looks, but a kids' game doesn't usually provide you with addictive game play, superb playability and a brilliant difficulty rang - so that's that stereotype out of the way. (Strafex's winning post is about stereotyping :-))

Nintendo have mounds of style. One that, Turbonutter, obviously overlooks. Their style of games is what lures me into believing that they are the best games' developers in the world. Their style is to produce entertaining and fun games. That's their style, and I like it.

It’s a bit late, but I thought I might express my anger towards Turbo here.

Thanks.

First off Rare have to get Nintendo's permission to use Donkey Kong, not the other way round. Nintendo own him as they do Starfox and the gang.
DonkeyKong is the result of no one other than Mr.Miyamoto.

And as for Timesplitters, It was created by 'some' Ex-Members of Rare, in particular, Doak himself and other developers from other companies.
And yet it still didnt surpass Goldeneye or even Perfect Dark.

That good eh? Or bad... Doom was a great game in it's day and technically is still a good game since it pushed the FPS genre ever forward. Now we have Deus Ex. I'm happy.

Yes, I agree. Startopia is a game... for aliens. But that's not what you said. I know.

That may be true, but you didn't say that they were in Rare at the time. Was this deliberate perhaps?
