As you all know, I’ve never liked Nintendo, for lots of different reasons. However, there’s always been another reason that I’ve never told you, because I couldn’t quite place it. Well, now I know what it is.
Nintendo have no style.
The first seeds of enlightenment were sown a couple of weeks ago when some twonk said the GameCube packaging was so much better than the PS2’s (as if we really care). When I looked at the packaging I thought:
“God, it looks so loud and tacky. It’s too OTT and Japanime.”
Finally, I realised when I was reading an article on the contents of the PS2 box in the OPS2 Special Issue #1 (God knows why. Actually, I don’t know why even bought it. There was some blatant cut ‘n’ pastery going on). It said, and I quote: “Inside the PS2’s minimalist packaging…” That’s when it hit me, as to why I like Sony so much better. Nintendo have no style whatsoever. The N64 and GameCube have very in-your-face designs. The still look like consoles made for kids instead of entertainment systems. This could be one reason why Nintendo fails to appeal to the trendy generation. The games are pretty much the same as well. There are a few exceptions, such as Extreme-G and WipEout 64, but the latter doesn’t count.
Sony, however, has style by the truckload. Sony in general as a company is ultimately cool. Most people have a Sony portable audio device of some sort, because apart from being very high quality, they are always very stylish. The design always keeps up with the current trend, even their bloody laptops look the business! The games always scream sleek as well. You only have to look at WipEout, GT and G-Surfers to realise this. Almost every game on the PS2 that’s any good is groovy in some way. SSX has some very cool moments, as does GT3 and ZOE. It’s just the PlayStation way.
In fact, a lot of people would have heard before the phrase “PlayStation culture”. The PlayStation comes with its own lifestyle. What other console would have a section on the perfect audio and visual set-ups, with advice on speakers, DTS systems and televisions? Exactly. Hell, there was even a PlayStation gig set up by Sony recently. They have these parties all the time, and the kinds of people that turn up are not just industry journos and FantasyMeister, but proper clubbers as well. Sony has managed to capture the heart, not only of tradition and hardcore gamers, but the new generation of trendy Ibiza dance-slaves, by making even videogames look cool.
The N64 DID have style. The N64 was (and still is IN MY OPINION) by far the best looking, most stylish console. The PSX is horrible, the Saturn was worse, the DC is boring, the PS2 looks pretty good and the GC looks cool but ONLY because it is so small. If it wasn't small then it wouldn't look very good. I think the PS2 looks the best of the next-gen consoles but nothing touches the N64.
:)
> Nintendo have no style?
CORRECT.
Dringo scowls you copied me opposite (erm yes) now Dringo is asking Edgy if he is back in action for the next Notable hunter story?
Anyway, who can resist the cute charms of a sandwhich case type design? Can you? Really? Ah, you have a very strong will. It is useless to resist! No? Well alright then I give up.
Excuse me?
How do you know that the numbers wouldn't have been the same if Sony hadn't entered the market?
Sony are a company out to make money, they could see that the gaming industry was going to boom at some point, and took a risk to invest in that industry.
It's like buying shares. You think a company will do well, so you invest. The fact that the company does well isn't a direct result of you investing, they would have done well anyway.
See what I mean?
You can't say "If it wasn't for Sony, gaming would still be considered geeky and not main stream like it is now." That's utter poo.
Also, who gives a rats @rse what the box of the console looks like?
When I go to buy my XBox, I'll get it from SR over the 'net, so I won't see the box until it arrives at my house. When I'll quickly take the console out of the box, put the box in the loft and PLAY THE GAMES.
I will have just bought a GAMES CONSOLE, not a LET'S SIT FOR 2 HOURS AND LOOK AT A CARD BOARD BOX MACHINE.
Turbo on the other hand has quite sensibly reached the conclusion that all PS2 games are pants, so he has decided to look at the box for some proper entertainment.
Nintendo has style, it's just not a cool style. It's an eccentric style. Which I prefer.
Sega's games have the greatest style ever. The undeniably cool (quote from a computer games journalist) games are fantastic. Jet Set Radio was hip, with it and stylish. It was new innovative, like a breeze that hits you. Metropolis Street Racer was also like that, it wasn't how fast you drive, it was how you drive fast. With games like that, Sega stood for sexy gaming.
But you are right about PlayStation culture. The PS2 has yet to make that impression. And worse still for Sony, many people I know are begginning to think of PlayStation culture as being very mid nineties. The world is changing and it needs a new gaming mascot.
