OK, I’ve been away for a while so my first topic for ages will be a (yay) console wars topic!

As you all know, I’ve never liked Nintendo, for lots of different reasons. However, there’s always been another reason that I’ve never told you, because I couldn’t quite place it. Well, now I know what it is.

Nintendo have no style.

The first seeds of enlightenment were sown a couple of weeks ago when some twonk said the GameCube packaging was so much better than the PS2’s (as if we really care). When I looked at the packaging I thought:

“God, it looks so loud and tacky. It’s too OTT and Japanime.”

Finally, I realised when I was reading an article on the contents of the PS2 box in the OPS2 Special Issue #1 (God knows why. Actually, I don’t know why even bought it. There was some blatant cut ‘n’ pastery going on). It said, and I quote: “Inside the PS2’s minimalist packaging…” That’s when it hit me, as to why I like Sony so much better. Nintendo have no style whatsoever. The N64 and GameCube have very in-your-face designs. The still look like consoles made for kids instead of entertainment systems. This could be one reason why Nintendo fails to appeal to the trendy generation. The games are pretty much the same as well. There are a few exceptions, such as Extreme-G and WipEout 64, but the latter doesn’t count.

Sony, however, has style by the truckload. Sony in general as a company is ultimately cool. Most people have a Sony portable audio device of some sort, because apart from being very high quality, they are always very stylish. The design always keeps up with the current trend, even their bloody laptops look the business! The games always scream sleek as well. You only have to look at WipEout, GT and G-Surfers to realise this. Almost every game on the PS2 that’s any good is groovy in some way. SSX has some very cool moments, as does GT3 and ZOE. It’s just the PlayStation way.

In fact, a lot of people would have heard before the phrase “PlayStation culture”. The PlayStation comes with its own lifestyle. What other console would have a section on the perfect audio and visual set-ups, with advice on speakers, DTS systems and televisions? Exactly. Hell, there was even a PlayStation gig set up by Sony recently. They have these parties all the time, and the kinds of people that turn up are not just industry journos and FantasyMeister, but proper clubbers as well. Sony has managed to capture the heart, not only of tradition and hardcore gamers, but the new generation of trendy Ibiza dance-slaves, by making even videogames look cool.

All consoles have their good games. The PC is the best for online games and FPSes. PSes are the best for platformers and arcadey games. And Nintendos are the best for, well, fun Nintendo style kiddy looking but good games. And the DC was just good at everything.

Mods may be great but I have Elite Force and I can safely say that I enjoyed playing Perfect Dark a lot more and that it is a much bettergame. Don't get me wrong, Elite Force is good but it's nothing compared to the brilliance of PD.

You do realise that the Playstation is a very old console now and that it's been out for over 5 years. The new Medal of Honour on the PC couldn't possibly run on a 5 year old PC which has not been upgraded now could it. I rest my case.

Elite Force is hundreds of times better than Perfect Dark, you can be the Doctor and kill people with a phaser rifle. The death animations and weapons are brilliant and the graphics are superb. Mods on PC games make them hundreds of times better than any console can achieve, it also increases lastability. Are you telling me that you'd rather just stick with the same people using the same weapons in the same missions all the time? I'm sure you'd get bored and it's a long gap between one game and the sequel.

Perfect Dark is just a remake of Goldeneye with better graphics. I say Deus Ex, it's an excellent FPS with RPG elements. Perfect Dark even came out after it I think, so that just goes to show that consoles are struggling at the back. Can you throw a villager in Perfect Dark? No, and what's better gameplay than throwing villagers around. By the time the GameCube comes out PCs will have Return to Castle Wolfenstein, so who will want to play Perfect Dark 2 when you can use a flamethrower against Nazis.

More evidence that Consoles just get things that aren't good enough for the PC is that Medal Of Honour was originally a Playstation game but the PC version is going to be an entirely new game that the Playstation couldn't possibly handle.

So what you're saying is that if you were given the chance to play Perfect Dark, you'd much rather play Half Life Elite Force or (and I'm trying not to laugh here) Quake 3. I doubt it.

Didn't you know TBN is never biased he prefers Sony but he has a view point from both sides :) I disagree i hate the PS2 look the X0box is too big and the GC does look odd but its so small, smart!

Let's just say Perfect Dark. Gameplay demolishes B&W and multiplayer is far better than Quake 3 online. Sure, you can't play against people from America but who cares. You get to kill your friends and that is a lot more satisfying. Just wait for PD2 on GC and then we'll see how your petty your PC games are against it.

By the way, I like PC games but (certain) consoles are better.

Who cares what a games machine looks like? A PC is generally just a beige box but look at the graphics it can produce! No console will ever catch up with the PC in innovation, graphics or gameplay. The fact is that consoles just have games that aren't good enough for the PC or are conversions of old PC games.
