Haven't touched my PS2 for a game in about 3 months now.
I played GT3 when a mate brough it over for a while, and we revisited Smackdown 2 for a laugh - But that's the 1st time in a long time I've used it for anything other than movies.
I do play PC games quite a bit, but have found them less and less interesting.
I don't know why that is. Same old games?
Max Payne is top, something radically new and exciting.
Completed it in 2 days.
Operation Flashpoint is good fun, but I only play that multi-player online with my boys, can't be bothered with the single-player campaign missions.
Train Simulator - At least it was different. I made fun of it, but it was like nothing else out there. Worth a laugh.
So I went back and revisted some old PC games I haven't touched in over a year.
System Shock 2 is ok, but just "run around ship, find key, use key, get out".
Even tried Counterstrike online but got bored with watching Clan Clowns win over and over and over again.
Why is this? Why am I growing weary with computer games?
There are some titles coming out that I will buy, Silent Hill 2, MGS2 and they should be good.
I played a demo of Red Faction on the PC, tutorial was awesome, but within 5 minutes of playing the 1st level, I was just running through mines shooting people.
*sigh*
I want something new, I want something to come along and completely blow me away, surprise and shock me.
MGS2 will be good, but again it's much of a muchness. Run here, hide and shoot.
There have been gaming moments that have made me smile with the freshness of them. Metal Gear Solid, hunting high and low for the frequency to contact someone, only to discover the code is on the back of the box.
THAT is what I want more of, developers using their ingenuity instead of just pumping more polygons in and upping the pixels.
Played Serious Sam on the PC.
That was a brilliant game, just run about shooting things.
No brain to it, no plot, no puzzles to solve, just pure shooting and running.
That was such a nice break from the "new gameplay" that is being rammed down my throat.
Black and White - when that was released, I was genuinely pleased with it. Seemed to be new and startingly innovative.
But it's not.
You train your creature for a bit, it learns and does it by itself.
That game is taking over villages, that's it.
Cast miracle, plant houses, take over village.
The end.
Is it that hard to come up with something original instead of just repeating old successes?
PC Gamer reports that since the release of Max Payne, other developers have been stealing the ideas of bullet-time etc and implementing them in their own games.
Hello?
Did it not occur to these people that the reason Max Payne has taken the gaming world by storm is that is has things never seen before?
In a few months, every game will have these little tricks, but we'll have seen them and be bored by them.
Where's the fun? Where are the new ideas? Where's the thing that will make me go "Jesus, that's stunning!"
I loved Metal Gear Solid, the hiding and stealth.
MSG2 will have nice graphics etc, but the idea is old now.
I trust Hideao has more little ideas like the code on the CD box, just a little something, a spark of originality.
Maybe that's why I'm not excited by The Gamecube.
Mario Worlds
Zelda's something-or-other
I'm sure they're good games, but I've played them before somewhere else.
I thought the PS2 would offer something stunning, but it hasn't done yet. There hasn't been a title (for me) that has made me sit-up and thank the lord that I paid £300 for a DVD player. I've played my original PSX games more than PS2 on that.
PC is used for multi-player mainly, because with real people, you can still be surprised by the events.
I just look around at video-games and see very little that is breaking new ground and amazing me.
Maybe that will change, maybe it won't, but I'll hang on in just in case.
But i bought a Snes 2nd hand dirt cheap with Street fighter 2 turbo and mario kart. Two of the best games on the system. Mario kart is probably the most enjoyable driving game i have ever played. It shocked me how a 10 YEAR OLD game had stood the test of time.

You funning muddy-funster, Starfox? Lylat Wars? Waste of

No, you don't
> understand, Lylat Wars sucked...it sucked...
Now, now... Lylat was great for people who had the sense to wait until it didn't cost 55 pounds anymore :-p
My friend got it complete with rumble pak for 25 pounds (about 2 and a half years ago).
I've borrowed it from him and it's great.
First there's different ways to complete each level and different routes to Andross.
That should take you a week to master.
Then you can start getting all the medals and trying to score as many hits as possible.
Then you can play the game again through the harder Expert mode and get all the medals again.
And even when you've done that, the multiplayer is still worth a few laughs (especially tank Vs ship battles)
I can understand why you're bitter at having to pay 55 pounds for it but if you looked past that and imagained that you'd payed no more than 35 pounds (the pound sign doesn't work on my keyboard) then I think you'll find that it was a great game!
By the way, I wasn't accusing of knocking Nintendo, I was just sugeesting something new :-)
I haven't got time to go into this right now, but I can see games that are different, and games that look fun, that I'm looking forward to playing.
Luigis Mansion is completely different to every other Mario game, and looks fun, Super Monkey Ball looks like an addictive puzzler coupled with some really great multiplayer games.
Yes there are the 'same olds' there too, like Wave Race and Super Smash Bros, but when you look at the amount of titles that offer something new AND fun, there are many that i'm interested in.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how Eternal Darkness turns out, the 'sanity' system could be something really awesome, or it could just be a novelty feature - if it's incorporated into the game right that it could really make a change from the run of the mill survival horror game.
But hey, if you're not enjoying games fine, go watch a few movies, read a few books ,(like you're not doing that anyway Goatboy!) when you see something that takes your interest seek it out and play it.
To me gaming is as much fun as it has ever been, and I'm more excited about an upcoming console than ever before, even though I supposed to be an adult now! When I find time to play games I love it, whether playing socially, or shutting out everything around me whilst going solo. To me it's still one of the most fun things I can do (well, with the kids watching, anyway) but maybe the day will come when i stop playing, but right now, I really, really can't imagine that!
I haven't even played a game for about a month and in last 4 haven't really played at all.
Last bought a game early February
There
So yes just can't be bothered these days
(You always did
> love the Starfox team ;-D)

*nurses come to drag Goatboy away from the nice people*
No, you don't understand, Lylat Wars sucked...it sucked...
*door slams and muffled cries can barely be heard*
I enjoyed Max Payne, because it had new features and did it very, very well.
But I completed it.
With most of the games, I just can't be bothered to try and finish them anymore.
It's what happens whilst I'm trying to finish them that holds my attention.
I wasn't slamming Gamecube or Sony or PC or N64 at all, it's the general malaise that I feel towards games in general.
I don't see that one killer app that makes me want to get that game now.
I don't "boil it down" to the simplest terms of "oh a platformer", I boil it down to whether or not I have fun doing it.
But I find more and more that I don't. Strategy games hold the most appeal, because it's an open ended structure, each play can be different through your choices.
But, at the end of the day, build up big army and vanquish foes.
Parappa The Rappa was a top game. Childish and very stupid, but great fun. Hit the buttons in time to create a rap.
Excellent, novel and fun.
Metal Gear was excellent, novel and fun but has been done to death now. Stealth here, quietly sneak there, quick gunfight and it's over.
It's the multi-player aspect that holds my attention now, I can't be bothered with the single-player gaming aspect, because I've seen it all before and don't have the time of interest anymore to complete it.
If it's fun just playing, great. But I don't have that "Must stay up and finish the game" excitement.
The last time I did that was Black and White, because that was completely novel and original until I sat back and realised all I was doing was casting spells over a village and taking over, whilst my creature stood and watered trees.
But the multi-player thing...ah now there is where the future of games lays.
Unreal over LAN after work with the IT boys, a mate coming over to play Smackdown 2 or Operation Flashpoint Online with my boys.
That makes me smile and enjoy games, but sitting by myself trying to defeat the end of level boss?
No thanks, got a lot more other stuff I could be doing.
But I know, like I've said, that I will buy Silent Hill 2, Smackdown 3, MGS2 and Commandos 2 because, whilst they may not break new ground, at least the old ground will be fun for a couple of weeks until I grow weary and search for the next fix
Ask yourself one question when you next play a game:
"Why am I playing this?"
Is it because you enjoy it, or is it really just so you can get to the next level?
It's fair to say that most games aren't played much once they've been completed - there's no drive to play it and you say you're bored of it.
Now, suppose you have no 'drive' to complete any of it in the first place. Why play it at all? There's no reason to. That's the position I consider myself to be in. I don't dislike games, I just have no desire to finish them, it's meaningless - therefore, all I care about is the gameplay - which isn't around in abundance nowadays.
I bought Goldeneye and my n64 about 3 years ago, I still get out Goldeneye, I love it. If you are after some games that have Longevity try the n64. Its dirt cheap and the games don’t cost limbs. Maybe one but that’s ok.
Ask any ninty about Goldeneye; ask them if they have completed it…Fully! This is a near impossible task and if you have done this a take my hat off to you, you are a superb gamer. Perfect Dark will have you playing for months, I got mine last Christmas and I am only on Area51 Infiltration, On Perfect Agent. This game has 100+ hours of gameplay. The Multiplayer is one of the best around with sims and all.
I know all ninty’s go on about these games and many people are sick of it. Why you ask? Because they are CLASSICS.
They provide you with endless hours of fun, if you don’t like it…. Don’t buy an n64. Simple.
My advise too you is to get an n64 with Perfect Dark, Goldeneye and Excitebike. Lock you self in a room and don’t come out until these games have been completed. By then you will be a super old man!
