Right?
We've all seen these muppets if you play online games, with [22414] Donkey or something so that you tremble in fear at them.
"Elite Clan" strokers that think and act like it's not a game but life itself. Strangely with a disproportionately high number of Germans.

Makes the game hard or frustrating when they all go on one side and proceed to wipe the floor, time after time after time and all congratulate each other and chant inane insults at newbies that don't really care.

So when I got Operation Flashpoint, I decided to start my own clan, for people fed up with those militia-morons that probably sit at home in combat gear and read Soldier of Fortune.
I stuck a message on the Codemaster Forums asking for light-hearted players that just wanted a game, didn't think it was real and couldn't be bothered with rules and regs.

Some clans I've seen are arranged like a real army.
Commanders, Lieutenants, one even has a "Special Ops" unit. For a computer game.

And the strangest thing happened in response to my plea.
I was inundated with responses from people sick to death of these clan-monkeys thinking they owned the servers.
We chose a name to reflect our not-entirely-serious attitude and got a website running.

As of today, The UK Dentists have almost 30 members.
Some have broadband access and host maps, others have designed the website that looks amazing, we have people that create maps and missions and we play on our own server for fun.

And the thing that really, really surprised me?
As well as people sick of Clans, we have the moderators and owner of the Official Codemaster forum as members, 2 guys from Codemasters and 3 people from Bohemia Interactive - the guys that made the game.
All UK Dentists and play for fun.

And we all suck. Even the guys that made the game can't be bothered to play it like it's real, we just get in tractors and run each other over, bail out of helicopters and have a fantastic time playing.

I'm not slamming all other clans.

Just those that operate and think they're really real.
We've had a flaming war going on with a US Clan that hates us for not acting like a real army.

Hello?
Computer game anyone?

And our argument is:
Look, if blokes that programmed this game are in our Clan, we must be doing something right.

I should probably defend us here..

It's true that many clans do take gaming very seriously, turn up at an i-series event and you'll find them spending hours practising, sorting out tactics, using headsets to communicate with people sitting next to you etc...but in some of these tournaments, there's a lot of money at stake.

For example, in the Q3 1v1 tourney, the winner gets £2500 and a place in the world championships..that, and the status it gives them within the multiplayer community makes it very important to them. Happens more in America, but we are starting to see professional gamers, people who play for money, and get sponsorship for using various peripherals at events.

We formed our clan - [oV] - because we're a group of people who all enjoy playing games together. We don't take it at all seriously, and we never really expect to win. Many of our matches seem to turn in to team-killing sniper battles between us, great fun at LANs, but scorned by the "serious" clans.

I agree that the behaviour on some servers is out of order, it does intimidate 'n00bs', but I just ignore it anyway. If that's what they enjoy doing, good for them, and I hope some day they discover the world outside of the 15/17/19" they spend their lives looking at..

Now THAT sounds like us.

Don't worry, the guys from Bohemia spent their "testing" mission chasing me down in a Skoda before hitting a wall and crawling out with broken legs.

We then proceeded to run them over repeatedly in our tractor.

We're playing tonight if you fancy it, I'll email you with the details in a bit.
And now you're a Dentist, you get your very own email address as soon as our web bloke gets back from holiday.

Yup, right after you sign up, it says that a game shall be arranged so that they can make sure you live up to their "high standards"... :0)

Hense why testing was in inverted comma type things.

And you'll win.

"Testing"? That's a new one to me.
They don't tell the originator and leader of the UKD anything these days.

The only test we used to have was you had to supply a screenshot of yourself saluting a tree and driving a tractor.

Wow! That sounds great Goatboy!! I dont own Op Flashpoint though.

The game I spend most time online is Cossacks which also has a huge number of Germans on there, but also in Black & White Online. I am not in any clans though!!

I'm sure this has something to do with the meaning of life...

A group of ten military geeks, taking themselves too seriously... all kitted up with machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades and whatever, planning weeks in advance at their strategy, having a website devoted, thinking they are actually in a war...

And the connection to the meaning?

The chance to run over these people in a tractor.

I'm going to join right now.
