The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
We've all seen these muppets if you play online games, with [22414] Donkey or something so that you tremble in fear at them.
"Elite Clan" strokers that think and act like it's not a game but life itself. Strangely with a disproportionately high number of Germans.
Makes the game hard or frustrating when they all go on one side and proceed to wipe the floor, time after time after time and all congratulate each other and chant inane insults at newbies that don't really care.
So when I got Operation Flashpoint, I decided to start my own clan, for people fed up with those militia-morons that probably sit at home in combat gear and read Soldier of Fortune.
I stuck a message on the Codemaster Forums asking for light-hearted players that just wanted a game, didn't think it was real and couldn't be bothered with rules and regs.
Some clans I've seen are arranged like a real army.
Commanders, Lieutenants, one even has a "Special Ops" unit. For a computer game.
And the strangest thing happened in response to my plea.
I was inundated with responses from people sick to death of these clan-monkeys thinking they owned the servers.
We chose a name to reflect our not-entirely-serious attitude and got a website running.
As of today, The UK Dentists have almost 30 members.
Some have broadband access and host maps, others have designed the website that looks amazing, we have people that create maps and missions and we play on our own server for fun.
And the thing that really, really surprised me?
As well as people sick of Clans, we have the moderators and owner of the Official Codemaster forum as members, 2 guys from Codemasters and 3 people from Bohemia Interactive - the guys that made the game.
All UK Dentists and play for fun.
And we all suck. Even the guys that made the game can't be bothered to play it like it's real, we just get in tractors and run each other over, bail out of helicopters and have a fantastic time playing.

"Welcome to the home page of the newly founded UK Dentists, an Elite Operation Flashpoint squad, dedicated
to all things non military.
The Dentists were formed by Elephant Rider in response to requests for a squad that doesn't have its head
stuck too far up its own rectum. No disrespect is meant to squads that are run like paramilitary organisations, it
just isn't our style.
Talking of style we have been busy developing our own inimitable playing style which differs in approach to
the norm. The recipe for successful play in our humble opinion consists of:
Large quantities of lager
A smattering of chaos
A healthy respect for the tractor, jeep, APC and Skoda
Never observing any recognisable military tactic
Not forgetting to salute the trees
Respect for quality farm machinery at all times"
LMFAO! Respect Goaty.
Instead of organising bands of militia to take over towns, we're going to have:
long distance endurance races around the town walls
kill a sheep in the most creative manner contests
late night barbecues in the forest
pot-holing expeditions in the natural caves
guided tours of Mir's areas of outstanding natural beauty
silly walk demonstrations
which bush am I hiding behind? demonstrations
and
'Who can shout the silliest joke' competitions in the town marketplace.
Having been the leader of an alliance in Planetarion, I agree with you, playing any game purely to win makes you lose sight of the fact the game is there for fun.
If, as Reaper mentioned earlier, money was at stake, I simply wouldn't bother about it, because the amount of your life that you have to invest into becoming an l337 player in any online game is horrific.
I wish the UK Dentists many happy hours of tractor driving and saluting of inanimate objects. Long may it continue to annoy the 'ph33r us' clans and irk the l337 milita groups that have tried to make these games their own.
Goatboy, I salute you, and I salute that tree behind you.
:-)
The were RPG/Platforming/Puzzle games.
Treasure Island Dizzy being one of the most famous...
I remember Dizzy games from my Amiga days!
Can't remember much though...
:-(
Although all this elitism shows that things can be taken too far...
Still, while you're in with the codies...
... could you slip them a few ideas about releasing a new Dizzy game...
When I get a better PC I'll join your OF clan. Sounds like a good idea!
www.maxgames.net
Counter-Strike, Quake 3, UT etc...mainly FPS stuff. Anyone seen bonus around? Meant to be joining us..
If you know them, could you give me the required specs for the game, please?
I have 5GB memory and windows95.
Cheers.
