It seems that from one day to the next, the game press is struggling over which console, if any, to support. Most of us notice that certain magazines are biased towards the Gamecube and others towards the PS2. And these are meant to be multi-format magazines.

Up until recently, the X-Box didn't really get a look in, until I found this snippet from a news article...

"First on the agenda is Soul Calibur 2, sequel to the finest Dreamcast game ever. Seen the Gamecube screenshots? The Xbox ones will be better - miles better, in fact. As of yet, no details are known about which version will be released first, but the Xbox version is sure to kick some serious console behind when launched.

Second to be announced was a new Ridge Racer title - ooh, about time. Ridge Racer Latest Version (tentative title) will hopefully feature the same blistering speeds as previous versions while adding some seriously hot graphics and the series' awesome gameplay into the bargain as well. Just think back to Ridge Racer V on the PS2 and see what it looks like now - imagine a game that looks twice as good and plays twice as good and you're getting somewhere nearer."

Call that hype or bias? Without screenshots to compare, this article has already stated that the X-Box screenshots will be miles better than the Gamecube ones, and invites you to imagine a game that will look and play twice as good as the PS2.

In a way, I'm not fussed, it's nice to see the X-Box start to get GOOD press, but when you consider that source of this snippet of news (Upwire), then I suppose they have to hype everything a little for sales purposes.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has discovered any 'pro X-Box' multi format magazines flying around yet?

Couldn't just be that you don't like to admit having made two consecutive poor decisions in your consol buying? :-)

Seriously though - taking purely the console market, as the 'other factors' aren't really relevant to the subject of this 'battle' - why blame Sony?

The N64 'failure' was Nintendo's fault, via a 'difficult' system and lack of interest/respect for 3rd-party companies, while the Dreamcast 'failure' was Sega's fault, via lack of advertising and promotion.

Sony had no direct link in the demise of either machine, other than the fact that they had a well-marketed - and therefore extremely popular - machine.

Their advertising never directly slated any of the opposition - they simply convinced people that they *needed* their product. And that is the basis of any advertising campaign, successful or not.

Strafex, you're probably right.

I have a dislike for Sony because I "blame" them for the demise of my beloved N64 and DreamCast, although there were a LOT of other factors as well.

I hope Nintendo do well, as they are the only initial console manufacturer to still be around. Sega, Atari etc have all bit the dust, as regards to hardware.

The 'Cube isn't really competition for the XBox as they are both different markets, so I can see them both being succesful without affecting each other.

However, I personally don't think there is room in the market for both the PS2 and the XBox. One will have to give some ground. Unfortunately I think it will be the XBox as Sony already have a MASSIVE userbase. Microsoft are starting from scratch.

I've just thought.
Looking in this thread I've found 2 different breeds of Xbox backer.

Both Your Honour and Fantasy Meister are planning on getting an Xbox.

They both want the Xbox to be the Market leader BUT

FM wants the Xbox to run alongside the PS2 and have the Gamecube crushed.
YH on the other hand likes the Gamecube and wants Sony to be wiped off the face of the gaming industry.

I reckon that YH has condemmed Sony for it's lack of innovation while FM probably had a bad experience with Nintendo before I was born...

The press can say what they like, but it won't hide the fact that the Xbox version of Soyl Calibur will have muddy graphics and will be difficult to control with that awkward lump of plastic that they're trying to pass as a controller.

That's my wholly impartial judgement. ;-)

having got all the evidence im pace (or whatever bollards they say in court), this is what I think:

If
Namco are using a superoir graphics engine in the XBox version of Soul Calibur 2, then it will look better than the 'Cube version.

Turbo says that the PS2 version of Ridge Racer was utter tramp, so the XBox version MUST be better.

So all in all, I agree with Snuggly.

Also, any good hype surrounding the Xbox is a rare thing, and should be nurtured and cared for in kind and considerate way, allowing it to grow and develop into fully fledged biasism. This should then allow the XBox to outsell the PS2, thusly wiping out Sony.

Sorted.

Sounds like we'll have to get Your Honour in on this one to give a ruling...

I feel I must defend myself here. Yes, there were no screenshots of any games (there aren't any yet), but Namco were quick to stress that the Xbox version of Soul Calbur 2 would be superior to the Gamecube (more advanced graphics engine etc.). As for Ridge Racer, I was simply stating that looking back at Ridge V on the PS2, you can see how quickly things have moved on already, and the Xbox version of Ridge Latest will, quite simply, look and play better. Obviously I don't know that for sure, but you would think it would, wouldn't you?

Meh, I expected better from Upwire, and I think Tony might have a little to do with this ;-)

Anyway, whoever wrote that obviously hasn't played Ridge V on the PS2! It's utter tramp!
