Without a headset i'd probably say it would be easier as you usually find yourself saying "Open door" only to have you team respond "Covering!", but with the old fashion method of pressing A, you can't go wrong... It's just the lure of the headset which makes the game awkward at some times.

Is the 1 player game influenced at all by the introduction of a headset?

No... It'll just be incredibly boring without.
