and then i decided to look at some reader reviews of the ps2 console...
and quite a few (some who had given it 4 out of 5 even) were talking about how the dvd playback was really bad and like other problems with the dvd....
is this true....
also are there any problems i should know about with the dvd side of the ps2...cos i was actually intending it not only to be my gaming machine (along with my dc) but also my dvd player....

According to the latest official PS2 mag, Sony have confirmed that the official DVD remote will be available in the UK from 31st August, priced at £19.99.
The remote comes with a CD containing new DVD driver software, giving PS2 new DVD facilities including reverse slow-motion, three speeds of fast-forward and rewind, four playback options (repeat, shuffle, program, A-B repeat) and a time display feature.

I have heard in the past that update discs will update a flash-ROM inside the machine, but this article states that it may load onto a memory card, like the original Japanese machines. I guess we'll know for sure when it finally comes out!

The official one comes with a disc to upgrade the DVD player software, giving several new functions.
Incidentally, regarding the quality of DVD playback...
There have been some problems, but generally it's fine. So good, in fact, that a friend of mine is considering selling his dedicated £400 Sony DVD player, as he's not used it since getting his PS2. (He does have it connected with the supplied composite cable, of course.)
that's why i didn't tell you what 2 games i got....
anyway...that could potentially be quite annoying with all that side swapping stuff.....
sigh....
anyway isn't the free dvd remote given by sr good enough??
or is the official one better??
The instructions are very unclear to change the ratio and you actually have to STOP the dvd to change it, I rang Sony to ask them how do I get these films so the actors don't look very stretched and thin lol and even Sony Europe's technical support hadn't figured it out yet.
The Lip sync issue is with a couple of badly encoded discs where the sound doesn't match the picture but as i said is only with a few discs and you can help it with the console diagnosis.
Another thing I've noticed while watching the castaway DVD is that very dark scenes you can notice some small squares which i'm still trying to understand why.
Other than that the player supports all features and 5:1 digital, oh and region X will make NTSC discs work too.
All we need now is the official remote!!
