"Several media outlets are reporting that Sony has sent memos to developers concerning future game projects. Apparently, Sony has been feeling the heat of the graphical power of GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox and the company has now advised developers to put more development time into creating better graphics and less time in developing lengthy gameplay experiences.

As consoles get more powerful, the video game industry has transformed into a visual presentation race. Sony's recent memo to stress graphics over gameplay is just a sign of the changing times."

Report from Nintendojo.

It's true though, isn't it, the real battle will take place on looks, with the casual gamer choosing the console that has the best graphics, assuming that it also has the best games.

Give it another generation or so, and gameplay will again become the main focus for developers, as all those that are there to be converted will have done so, the casual gamers will become more informed or lose interest - the size of the gaming industry makes in unlikely that there will be another generation of 'newbie gamers' that apparently were brought into it by the appeal of the Playstation.

Before i got my playstation i was using my pc for games blood, doom etc and oh god the amount of bugs and "errors" in pc games is a joke. The PC games are pretty good but lets face it they're all first person shooters or command and conquer type stategy games. The amount of hassle just to get a game running is pathetic install, direct x, misc options, turn off screen saver, set graphics type, sound card type, download patches, bug fixes oh give me a break PSX pop game in and viola. No crashing, juddering or anything, the game is specifically written for you exact hardware and runs perfectly.

If a game which I'd been playing hard through crashed it's unforgivable!! My playstation over the years has crashed just the once when i was curious to see what would happen if i highlighted every xplorer code and now i know.

I'll be staying as far away as I can from a PC in a box, Microsoft should stick at creating office software because thats what they do best, that and wipeing out the competition so they're the only choice.

They've already nicked Munch's oddysee and most of the xbox titles should be on the PS2.

The Xbox is more likely to crash than any other console, because the P3 can't cut the mustard and sustain the GPU. Therefore, you might get erratic slowdown and "stalls". MS are trying to sort this, they've already cut the specs once, so it's anybody's guess how it will turn out, but at the mo it's looking a little dodgy. Also, it uses a stripped-down version of Windows and DirectX. Now, these often seem to be quite stable (Dreamcast, Palm Pilots), but then again, it IS still Windows, and the OS will have to be bigger because the structure is still fairly modular.
