Sure, in the end the main advantages they have is that they save tangled wires, let you have a bit more freedom of your playing position and distance from the console, and are a nice novelty.
On the other hand they munch batteries and cost more, both of which mean they cost more i guess...
They've been around for every, i almost bought one for my master system 2 (until i decided they eat too many batteries and cost too much), and i'm sure they were floating about for ages before that on some level.
I think the reason they're coming back now is because with 4 controlers there are more wires to get tangled, and price has increased enough so that the difference made by adding the IR isn't so much, relative to what you have to pay anyway. Plus more casual gamers like novelties. And it's hard to get all 4 players around the tv within the distance the cable allows, and even if you do, some muppet always whines about the reflection from the windows.
