The main reason was the direction of the francise. From the village towns and fending of flying bugs in Link's Awakening we were warped ever so quickly to The Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask where gloomy dungeons and scary scenes took over. So with this franchise that is suposed to be for kids we have gloomier than usual dungeons and 12ft monsters with multi-coloured tails.... not good. I'm not saying OOT was bad, BUT a Gamecube sister wasn't what Miyamoto wanted.
Okay so the SW2000 screens were good, and I for one wouldn't have shunned a lovely pre-rendered Zelda with FMV and lots of cool graphics... what I would have shunned is a spruced up ZELDA: OOT clone with a different storyline... 'The Legend of Celda' is much more original and with the 'toon-shading' some different doors are opened... of course some have closed but at least where Zelda is concerned we're on new ground.
I admit my first impressions weren't good, BUT after a couple of hours of thinking (and crying hysterically.. :D), I suddenly realised that the game would be packed with originality and greatness. The graphics are something new to Zelda but it doesn't mean for one second that the gameplay, which some believe made Zelda, with be traded in for humour and babyness. The comic humor in the game will have attracted a lot more people to the game and if a cartoon 'Celda' means parents wrap-up Gamecubes for their kids for Christmas 2002 then good! Because everyone deserves to experience it.
One of the main reaons I didn't buy, rent or even take a second look at Majoras Mask was because of the gloomy look. No, I'm not scared of it, but I just wasn't interested in a gloomy game... how can such a miserable looking game cheer anyone up!? I'm glad that Celda isn't like the other Zeldas that, over the years, have portrayed more and more gloomyness... And for those of you who're saying: "Pah, it isn't graphics that make the game!" Then give The Legend of 'Celda' a chance! The game has no reason to play any worse and to add some humor to the game to cancel out all the miserableness that has infected the franchise over the past few years... GOOD!
What you have to remember is that Nintendo aren't slacking off... the game, according to experts, is made well and despite the cartoonyness it fits together well with solids hitting and realtime shadows. Okay so Riding in the field in OOT might not be beaten by riding a cartoon horse with over-sized nostrils but where old records still stand new ones will be created and I guarantee 'The Legend of Celda' will have many pro's and it WILL be enjoyed by all... well... all who have a decent sense of humour and are up for playing a decent game!
Game
Orcarina of time had the lovely land of hyrule that only got nasty when Link had grown up and even then it was great as dramatic effect to show the terror of Gannondorf.
Majora's Mask did have gloomy temples and had a miserable atmousphere as the moon got closer to clock town on the last day but it also had plenty of other "brighter bits to do".
Solving peoples personal problems was one of them using the notebook and others included doing errands like playing in a band or taking pictures of female pirates.
I thought that it was absolutely brilliant.
The new Zelda WILL have a dark and gloomy side to it somewhere.
It's essential to an epic storyline.
Still, it's true what you say, there's enough gloomy games as it is. If you want total horrible depressed gloom for example, play Max Payne, there's not even a glimpse of happiness in that. Though it's an extremely good game and you feel absolutely nothing like a superhero (in a good way). A game doesn't have to be to an extreme, it can be 50/50, but it's good to see both ends exist because if there were no cartoony jolly games then we would all be depressed about things that didn't even happen to us. Well, maybe not but it certainly can be good to cheer up with a game of Mario or the like and Mario isn't even the most cartoony game (well, maybe).
Personally I'm hoping for some Zelda fun and if it claims to be an RPG but turns out to be action again, I'll kill it. I think that the graphics look like they could turn out fine, I think that the gameplay should be brilliant and I can't see why these things couldn't be true. So here's hoping for a humour filled, action packed, cartoon romp around the land of Hyrule that everyone really can enjoy. Let's also hope they give Link the credit he deserves by calling it "Link: A game without Zelda".
