Atari 2600, 5200 7800 Sega Master System or Colecovision, Intellivision or something else?
According to me it is the NES, originally released as the FamiCom (FamilyComputer) in 1983 in Japan and then released in 1986 in the USA as the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). It is the console which captivated the multi-billion dollar video game industry as we know it today. It recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in September, earlier this year.

I'm going to get a SNES when I've got a bit of cash together - mainly for the mario games - Super Mario World and Mario Allstars. Definitely my favourite console of all time.
Although the N64 has my favourite game of all time, Goldeneye, and most of the runner ups (including the two Zelda's, Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini), it's been outdated by the Gamecube, which generally does the same job only with a lick of new paint.
Although the magic is missing from the Gamecube titles, they are still infinately more playable than those 64bit classics.
The Snes, on the other hand, is timeless.
Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid are still untouchable, unbeaten, timeless classics.
Yeah, Mario Kart and Starfox are unplayable messes compared to the updates (although I hear that many will disagree with me with Mario Kart) but the 2D gaming stopped there at it's peak.
The Snes is also the home to the last decent Bomberman game.
That reminds me, I've still not attained Zelda yet...

understatement. it's the 2nd best videogame ever made.
the first being Mario World on the SNES :)
my first "this rocks" moment in gaming was still using a lightgun on my C64 games though, that light truly was fantastic ;)
