In all of you.

Really I am, and you call yourself Nintendo fans.

The announcement of the DS excited me in ways I can't describe on a family forum, and that is because it is one of the most funning excellent ideas Nintendo have come up with in years. And what do you lot say?

Annoymous forum member 1: "It won't have a massive line up"
Annoymous forum member 2: "Third parties won't support it"
Annoymous forum member 3: "It won't sell"
Annoymous forum member 4: "Nintendo should concentrate on making their home console a success and stop wasting money"

etc... etc...

What are you? Nintendo shareholders (I know one of ya is) or Nintendo gamers?

Right fancy a bussiness look at it? Right Nintendo have confirmed a system that could fall on its ar$e or become a roaring success sealing Nintendo's future and making millions. Either way it will do one thing at E3... steal Sony's PSP's thunder... and by heck that is what is needed. Nintendo always stated the N5 would compete head to head with the next gen consoles but what if Sony get a head start with the PSP... what if Nintendo can't make the titles and release the next Gameboy in time to prevent the threat? Well release a different handheld, an idea they've been thinking over, something that could succeed... and what better time to release it... than head to head with a Sony monster.

But this post is not about the bussiness side of things. For starters can you all get the idea that it is vital Nintendo make money, can you remove from your brain any worries about advertisement, competition etc... and for a change think about the games. Right done that? Good. Now the Nintendo Dual Screen console is a handheld device with two screens... that is no other console that offers this... it will play games we will never have ever played before... it will allow for similtaneous play.... it will be genius.

The possibilties are endless... a quick 5 minute think about this from me has churned some ideas up. Imagine what you could do if you controlled 2 sets of Pikmin on other ends of the map AT THE SAME TIME (in an advanced form of Pikmin 2) enabeling totally new puzzles. Imagine a Mario and Luigi game where Luigi is seperate from Mario and can collect a code with one screen that you can view the code with and put that code in as Mario in the next screen. No doing it for ya? How about a racing game where you control 2 vehicles.... too complicated... how about 2 racing views... one showing a behind view of the cars and one showing the normal driving mode. How about a metroid game that sticks to the third person roots in one screen and the new first person mode in another (now there's an idea)....

Of course a simple idea is 2 camera angles.... 2 seperate viewpoints... perfect for stealth games.

Naturally I'm no developer... I'm sure I've missed the best ideas and they've never considered these ones...

But that's the thought... the possibilties are endless... this REALLY IS A COOL NEW GAMING EVOLUTION. I don't care if it will sell... it really doesn't matter... there is no point discussing it, it could go down well or it could flop we'll have to wait and see. As for now.... now we just imagine what new, original ideas Nintendo will come out with for the launch.

What do you think? Get rid of preconceptions of a money making jugganaught (which it could be) and replace it with excitiment for a new gaming venture?

Thank you Nintendo, the industry was just getting boring too.

Dringo.

Ah but this is released first....

lets say it catches on... becomes a phenomona... does it matter Nintendo are competing with themselves.

Then lets say it bombs, great idea, great games... crap sales. The Gameboy whizzes past it.

Does it matter?

I think it is great Nintendo are going head to head with the PSP with not one but two handhelds... it'll certainly have Sony pondering.

One of my main concerns is, is Nintendo competing with itself? How long till the GBA?

Having too many hand-held consoles in the market will just confuse customers. There's the GBA/SP, the DS, then the PSP, and then Nintendo release the GBA2.

Average Job Bloggs kid on the street will see Playstation hand-held and go "Oh! Got to get me one of them." And then they'll be a variety of different Nintendo hand-helds for people to choose from, with My Average not know which is which, and what's going on, and so just buy the PSP!

Might happen!

Hey I call myself a Ninty, but I just have to disagree with Nintendo that the DS is anything but a bad thing.

All those points you listed Dringo.. all valid points.

So we should "remove from your brain any worries about advertisement, competition etc.. and for a change think about the games"?

Nintendo has the best games on it's consoles. Without a shadow of a doubt. It has Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, as well as most of the important 3rd party titles. I'm thinking about the games right now Dringo, but I'm also thinking that the Cube is in third place in Europe despite this. Competition and lack of advertising being major factors in the Cube's current position.

I love Nintendo. I've loved them from the first time I switched on very first console, a Gameboy which I got for Christmas over 10 years ago. I've never bought a console that isn't by Nintendo, and I've increasingly followed the companies fortunes over the last decade.

You dissapointed in us Dringo? You're questioning calling us Nintendo fans because we don't like one of Nintendo's decisions? I've hated some of the stuff Nintendo has done before. It's continual lack of advertising, the way it treats Europe like it's anus-hole sometimes.

It could be great, but I can see the DS making Nintendo worse-off if it flops. Putting money in a project that may fail, splitting Nintendo's handheld market, not concentrating on a huge push behind the GBA2 to beat the PSP. Sure the DS might be able to steal the PSP's thunder, but so would the GBA2 if they'd put the work they'd done on the DS into that.

As a loyal fan I feel I have the right to critise and complement Nintendo's decisions. I'm not going to be blind enough to try and say that I think the DS will succeed even if I love Nintendo. So, yeh I call myself a Nintendo fan. Just not a blind one.

Yeah was always a problem.

Nintendo never released a console because they "felt like it" they hoped it would either increase sales of a system or would go on to be the next big thing.

They hoped, a few years before they released it, the 64DD would increase the N64 popularity. Of course they doubted that by the release and so released very limited supply in Japan alone.

The VB again was hopefully this big new "idea" but it had too many problems.

The GB pocket was released to make the Gameboy more portable with a new and improved screen launching with Pokemon.

The Gameboy Color is obvious enough but the SP was released for multiple reasons, the original GBA cause a few complaints and Nintendo also wanted to attract an adult market so created a cooler looking system.

As for the DS, I believe Nintendo think it could be the next big thing and make a load of money with new, original ideas... and I believe it could be a potential gold mine of both money and new game ideas. Again it could be done wrong without the right software.

But the potential is exciting, and considering we don't really know the specs, the games or what the console looks like to start criticising the idea is plain dumb. Right now it seems like a facinating Idea and at E3 we'll see exactly how facinating.

Could also get rather irritating! Specially as hand-held consoles are ideally consoles for on the move. It's hard to keep track of one screen at the best of times, let alone TWO!

Hmmm.... but wouldn't you get tired if every game had you controlling two things at once all the time!

They should just have had one BIG screen, because how baren is it gonna look, if your making a game and it only needs one screen. And all you can see in the other screen is your gormless reflection!

> Nintendo won't release a console for the hell of it,

Yes they will! Your a Nintendo fan boy, just look at their history and it tells you they do! This isn't neccesserialy a bad thing on Nintendo's part. It's good that Nintendo are a company that is willing to try something new. Doesn't mean everyone has to think it's a fantastic idea tho!

Just gave everyone in Japan migranes!

Stop looking for patterns...

I've discussed this with a few people and they have all agreed that it has a lot of potential... why can't anyone actually think about it?

Isn't concentrating on 2 screens at once more of a challenge anyway?

Imagine controlling 2 things at once, challenging yes... if done well fantastic.

There are literally thousands of ideas to explore with this, i presume the PSP announcement has meant Nintendo have pushed the release forward.

Nintendo won't release a console for the hell of it, they'll release it if they believe they can do something with it. The VB was made of course by Gunopi Yoki or whatever and it was actually pretty good... just lacking in many areas to stand up.

1.GameBoy => 2.GameBoy Pocket => 3.GameBoy Color => 4.Virtual Boy

1.Great => 2.Nintendo makes it cooler => 3.Nintendo actually makes an improvment => 4.Nintendo releases stupid hand-held console which flops and not release in most of the world
(and before Dringo jumps on his high-horse, I couldn't remember if the VB came out before the GBC or not, and frankly couldn't care less)

1.GBA => 2.GBASP => 3.NDS => 4.GBA2
1.OK => 2.Nintendo makes it cooler (and adds a light) => 3.Nintendo releases stupid hand-held console which flops => 4.Nintendo release another decent 'new technology' hand-held console

:)

Can anyone say 'Sega 32x'?

This is my prediction for what'll happen - Miyamoto (or whoever) has come up with a fantastic idea that uses two screens at once. It'll be completely original, completely fantastic, will be heralded as a classic and will sell millions. But they'll never release anything as good for the system again, and neither will anyone else. It'll have Mario Kart, Pokemon and Metroid, then will slowly slip into the nation's unconciousness.
