Now I'm starting to get used the idea of the DS; at first I was a little disappointed (little being something of an understatement), but with upcoming support from Konami and a fair few titles already in development, I'm actually starting to look forward to the double-screen joy it could create.

But I was disappointed for a very good reason - online gaming. I've never really thought that Nintendo would go for online gaming on the Cube (after PSO V2 it seemed to just... disappear), but after the announcement of a 'third pillar', I couldn't help but wonder if Nintendo would opt for a system dedicated to online.

It's not really as stupid as you may think, despite Nintendo being anti-online (so to speak), looking at their history they've had a lot of experience in it.

Both the NES and SNES had online capabilities, while neither reached Europe it was obvious Nintendo were trying to bring this brand new craze to the gaming world. Even though they were failures, good things did come out of them; Zelda BS, despite its title, sounded pretty good. All the brilliance of A Link to the Past, with added features, not that far from the recently re-released Ura-Zelda (Ocarina of Time: Master Quest). Plus there were downloadable levels for F-Zero and a number of other features. It may not have been fully implemented into either the SNES or NES' life, and as I said, lacked a European launch, but there was always promise.

The 64DD (yet another of Nintendo’s failed add-on's) took this one step further with more downloadable F-Zero content, including new map-maker objects. Nintendo were always one step away from the true possibilities online gaming entailed, simultaneous multiplayer with people all around the world, but they plugged away and away regardless, coming up with different ways that online could work.

Instead of making yet another add-on for their home console, I thought Nintendo was finally going to go the whole way and devote a brand new format to this long-running dream. Yes, the DS is new and exciting, but online could have been so much better. Maybe it's because all of these added features failed that Nintendo feel disheartened to go ahead and think of the possible gaming 'future' that is online, and it's surely a great loss.

Nintendo's new pillar? It could have been something on a much huger scale, and I don't think Nintendo were a million miles away from releasing such a product, but instead we settle with innovation; while Nintendo think online is a little hit or miss, perhaps their own originality is.

Let's hope the DS delivers...

That's the point... I can come up with a new gaming idea for the DS every hour or so.... none of them will be used...

Imagined what genius game designers who get paid tonnes for their games can come up with a.k.a Miyamoto.

Just because you have ideas, doesn't mean Nintendo will use them.

Which is probably a good thing.. ;p

Well I can think of a million and one possible ideas... like to see as many ideas that I have released in a year.

Yes, but after a year or so we'll have seen all it has to offer.

Nintendo don't seem to want to give the GameCube online support, why not dedicate one console to it? It's not really as crazy as may think, there are many people who don't care about online gaming, so want a console that focuses on offline titles, and there are some people who only want online games, making an online 'third pillar' perfect.

I always used to stretch a single point into an entire post to try for GAD... rarely worked.

How can online play be classed as a "third pillar go along side the GBA and GC"? Explain how that would work other than an Online only console?

Online doesn't go along side the GC or N5... it's apart of them.

As for DS being limited in ideas, Nintendo's latest statement claims that the screens can "become one extended screen".

I never said it was replacing online play; all I'm saying is that I truly believed Nintendo would maybe opt for online in their third pillar and perhaps it would be a better idea. Yes, bringing innovation to the world is what Nintendo does, but I don't think the DS can be classed a brand new pillar for Nintendo, it's certainly limited in it's ideas.

This post is in no way a dig at the DS, just explaining my disappointment and how Nintendo could well have gone for online.

Oh, and I've never won GAD for a post, so no, this isn't a GAD attempt, does it look like one? :-P

Or "GAD ATTEMPT"

Anyway.

Online play isn't a third pillar... we all knew it was a third system and not online support... online support will be something for the N5.

Anyway with a few Ubi-soft games and PSOv3 going online this year we are not totally left in the dark.

The DS isn't replacing online play Rickoss... that is something totally seperate entirely... we'll just have to see what Nintendo are up to regarding that.

That looks GENIUS. Just to play as Donkey Kong on a motorbike... it would be too good to handle.
