Cube Europe:

A recent news report suggests that the N5 has been put on hold for the forseeable future. A Dow jones news wire reports the following news:
OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nintendo Co. (7974.OK) has decided not to release a new video game console to follow its current GameCube for the time being, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Tuesday edition.
The home-use game machine and software developer will instead diversify games and sell newly developed peripherals mainly for the GameCube. It will make games for the current model more appealing, while rivals Sony Corp. (6758.TO) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) plan to debut high-performance next-generation consoles that can be also used for non-game content such as movies and music.
Nintendo plans to release peripherals as early as 2005. Although details aren't yet known, these devices are expected to diversify playing styles by improving the gaming experience and connections with hand-held units rather than improve graphics and sound quality.
The decision to withhold the release of a new console was made because while the game market is contracting and becoming more diverse, "customers are fully satisfied with the performance of the current model," President Satoru Iwata said.
Nintendo will continue in-house development of a new home-use game machine for release in the future, but for the current future will add functions to the GameCube."

No longer releasing an N5 before PS3/Xenon then? Instead making add-ons to extend the Cube's lifespan.. the 32x, Mega CD and the 64DD spring to mind.. I agree the Cube-Europe, that by making non-standard peripherals essential to the playing of some games you split your userbase and make the Cube seem less attractive than the brand-spanking new rivals it'll have.

It would seem that the N5 has been indefinately postponed.. what are Nintendo doing!?

Have to agree with you Cooky.

Here though I'd have to say that the PS1 was a stonking success and millions upon millions more than have Cubes have them, plus of course the software can be played on PS2.

Apart from, I hate to say it, I prophosise even worse doom - Nintendo have already said that when they leave the hardware market, they leave the software market too.. although they did also originally say they'd release the N5 before the PS3.. Personally I'd ABSOLUTELY HATE to see Mario and Zelda on another console. I can't even begin to describe how that would feel.

How you can manage to put your usual smiley at the end of your post, I have no idea.. :)

Well, you could still say that developers are still releasing software for the PS1 (and even the Dreamcast in Japan).

As much as I try to see this as a good move for Nintendo I can't. They were a year behind the release of the PS2 and that really did NOT do them any favours. If they still do plan on releasing future consoles, and it will be an extended time after PS3 or XBox2, then it will surely FAIL!

I see this as a sign to the end of the Nintendo home consoles. I think Nintendo are more interesting in creating stupid peripherals and hand-held consoles. But if the PSP does prove to be a stonking success, I think it could spell doom for Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer. With them then going down the same road as Sega and only releasing software on the other available platforms.

Hmm, if it is true it is not necessarily a bad thing.

This is worrying. Add ons just do not sell well. Some peripherals do, like the Eyetoy.

But if Nintendo are to stay a first party company they need their own console (well obviously). But to make much in the way of money they will need to keep other developers developing for the Cube as well. If Nintendo don't release another console for several years then they may well just abandon Nintendo.

Imagine if Nintendo were still pushing the N64. Well they could still manage an acceptable level of graphics and sound, with the main emphasis being the gameplay. But everyone else would have packed up and gone home long ago.

Yet, that is what seems to be suggested for the Cube. Surely thought, even Nintendo couldn't do something THAT daft.

Thats absoluely mad, add ons will never work. If they don't release a new console with the PS3 and Xbox 2 they can kiss good bye to a lot of things. Surely its just rubbish talk.
