I'd played bits of the game before, but had never played from the beginning.
I 'played' for an hour and a half, but in all honesty, I felt like I only actually played for about 5 minutes.
The rest of that time was filled up with cut-scenes and tutorials.
I found this SO incredibly frustrating.
I do like RPG's, well ones from the SNES era, and was expecting more from this, but I felt I was just on my way to the next cut scene.
Well at least the cut-scenes look good. They're impressive, and tell you the story, but honestly, I really felt that it was wholly unnecessary. The story was still unfolding slowly, but with added crap I didn't need to see, or need to know.
What I actually got to play I did enjoy, but it was so frustrating starting off.
Surely as i progress in the game I'll be left to my own devices a little more? Please?
In batlles I found the Gf's very handy indeed, they certainly helped me beat that guy that looked like a demon, and becomes a GF himself once you beat him.
But did I have to see the stupid animation every damn time?
Oh look, some icy bird has popped up out of the ground. She's scantily clad, how exciting. Oh look, she's firing ice at that guy. Again. And again. And again.
No wonder the game is on four damn discs.
FMV could be a useful tool, but when it detracts from playing the game? No thanks, I don't want it!
Some at the start of the game to set the scene is good, a little when you meet a major character, or defeat a major enemy too is acceptable. Loads at the end too. But please, let me actually play the game too.
Which is what made it a superb game.
Red Faction also used FMV sensibly.
You're about 26 Meka, right?
Bah! 23!
Besides, I don't hate FMV, I just found it was overused in the early stages on FF8.
I just wanted to get on with a quest.
And whenever I got into a fight, and wanted to use my GF's I had to watch the same old GF animation.
This made the battles much longer than necessary, and battles aren't the reason I play RPG's.
I found that it didn't add to the game, but hampered it.
Anyway, FMV.
It isn't a bad thing, sure it gets in the way, BUT you've seen how well movies tell stories and there's no reason why FMV can't be as successful.
What you have to remember is that lots of people like FMV, and when Zelda is shown at Spaceworld you might change your mind and open up to the opportunities that FMV provides.
You're about 26 Meka, right? So a lot of your most influential years would have been filled with brown hi-fi speakers, tacky 80's pop and... 16-Bit RPG's. So it's easy to see why you might not like FMV's, they weren't necesary then and they shouldn't be now, but the thing is, they open more doors for games developers... it sounds silly I know, but with FMV you can show two different scenes at the same time... kind of.
Think of Star Wars... you have the Jedi - Sith Battle and The Dog-Fight Air Battles... with FMV you can show this, but it's quite hard to with normal graphics and even more-so with text...
Okay, so FMV isn't exactly the Oxygen of the gaming industry, but it can add well to a game and bring all the excitement of a movie to your home console.
I'm not Tech whizz, but I think, with a bit of practise, most developers will be able to pick out the pro's of FMV and use them to benefit games with no drawbacks!
Game: Still Ranting... and making no sense at the same time?!
