Well do we? What type of a person are you? Do you need a game that lasts 70+ hours or are you the type of person that likes a short exillerating experience (hmmm sounds a bit iffy)?

Games come in many different lengths. Some will last you much, much longer than others, but which do you actually prefer?

For example, Final Fantasy. This game is the type of game that is meant to guarantee you hours and hours of gameplay. The game is absolutely huge and the playing area is absolutely massive to say the least. Added on to the length of the game is the fact that you could do the "I want every single item" thing and go on a search for each and every item. If this sounds fun to you I guess you are a 70+ hour type of gamer.

On the other hand we have Conkers Bad Fur Day. If you have playied it you will know what I mean. This game is dissapointingly small. There may be reasons for this, amount of speech you can fit on a cartridge, ideas for the game and many other things, but the bottom line is it only lasts you about 12 hours. For some people this is exactly what they want. A game that you can have short or long bursts on without getting bored. Also each moment in the game will be remembered well because of the shortness of the game.

I hate short games, but I loved Conkers Bad Fur Day. I loved the actual game, but I hated the shortness. For some this isn't a problem, but for me it is. I am a 70+ hour gamer. I like a lenghly gaming experience that will keep me occupied for weeks.

Obviously some don't and this breed of gamers are a puzzle to me. So what type of a gamer are you?

I think with the way todays standards are we do need games that can last or give you a continuous challenge. Im not saying we need a game that takes you ages to complete just something to make you play it over and over. Like a good multiplayer mode. This is why games like bomberman and goldeneye are so popular. They make you want to play against friends/computer to be the best with each game being slightly different from the last.

Without this some of the great games seem to be put down a little. Take MGS for instance, a truely great game but once you complete it 3-4 times you have seen all it has to offer. There isn't much to make you want to play again.

Longevity isn't quite as important as graphics or gameplay as if these are poor then the game will be poor no matter how long it would make you play for. But longevity can make good games great. Take the GT series. If you want to have alot of the best cars then it will take a while to earn the money then buy them and upgrade them and win the others. This requires alot of playing and each car drives a little differently from the others.

I think what we may see in the future (once on-line gaming has been around a while) is extras for games being available to download, this will help increase how long games last. Theres no point buying a game that lasts you a day then your done.(Renting it would be cheaper and wont make you feel as though you have been cheated out of your money).

I think this is something developers should concentrate a little more on, whether its by adding multiplayer options or just making the game similar to the GT series or wrestling(and other sports games) so that each time you play it is a little different. Its definately an important thing to think about when creating a game.

Donkey Kong is the god of Longevity. The game is so brilliant.

When I had to do the DK arcade thing on DK64 I was playing it for hours and didn't get bored, even when I was losing.

Mind you atually playing i o the nes is better so I think I had better go over my mates house. CYA!

Ah, well. I like a game that will last for a very long time. The kind of game you can come back to, even after you've completed it. To a certain extent, this does not include adventures and RPGs, only arcade style games, but there is still lots of fun to be had from adventures, just with a more limited timescale.

Hey, I'm still playing games like PacMan and Donkey Kong, now THATS longevity!
