OK, I've got an AMD K6-2 333mhz processor (Socket 7) and it quite frankly, inadequet. I want a new one but no-way am I paying some trained monkey with an instruction book to put it in for me, so, is it easy to do?

I want to buy the highest processor I can without buying a new motherboard. I've seen a 550mhz for £30 but someone said once it wouldn't work in my PC. Advice?

Thanks.

The process of actual changing the CPU couldn't be much simpler...socket installations especially, just don't bend the pins. As far as speed goes..I really wouldn't bother with a 500 actually. Even if your motherboard could take it (which I doubt, without unlocking and a bios hack anyway), I don't think it's worth the effort. As Max Payne proves, the minimum specs are increasing, and £30 for a 500 mhz..well, my 800mhz duron was £40, and that can hit 1ghz easy after overclocking.

I can see why you'd be resistant to upgrade your motherboard, but it may be worth saving a bit more then getting a new mobo (£80 or so), and 256mb ram (£23 last time I checked), and then a mid-range Duron. Costs more, yes, but a much better longer term solution - you'll have to make more upgrades soon anyway, and this is £30 towards a quick fix which you could be saving for a much better all-round box.

What motherboard do you have?

If you look in the instruction book it will tell you what speed CPU it can take.

I'd be surprised if you can still get a CPU as slow as 500MHz to be honest. I imagine it would be worthwhile getting a new motherboard as well, but then you may need new RAM and a new PSU as well. It can get expensive, but the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will get.
