2004 has seen the announcement and will see the unveiling and release of the Nintendo DS. A system that has caused debate on this forum, gamesradar's forums and in fact every gaming forum on the planet... it has also caused much arguments on gaming websites, magazine (all the new ones) and concepts being sprayed left right and centre. A failure or a success?

Or does it really matter?

I said does the success of the DS really matter? Surly when chief advisor and ex-president Yamauchi says Nintendo "will be crushed", we presume Nintendo are trying to sell it as a new craze... a money spinner.

But that isn't EXACTLY what Yamauchi said, he said "Nintendo won't go bankcrupt but they will be crushed". Now lets think about that. For a month we've presumed that Yamauchi is telling us that if DS does badly then Nintendo would be in serious trouble money wide. But is he? What if he means if the idea doesn't appeal to people Nintendo would be crushed. What if he is saying the DS is a massive clue to the future of Nintendo and if the public don't like it then it will seriously damage Nintendo's plans.

Iwati has said a few times he doesn't expect it to sell well... in fact he said he would be happy if just "15 people" clapped the unveiling at E3. Why? Because it won't sell... it won't do too well... but if we all like the idea, are interested in it, the critics and media fall in love with the idea... then Nintendo know they are onto something.

It has slowly come to my attention of a phrase Iwati will not stop sprouting around "It'll give a hint to the next generation of hardware".

What if Nintendo don't care for the sales of the DS? Sure they'd like to make their money back and a bit of profit... which can be attained by appealing to a small userbase. But what if the DS is really a stepping stone, an experiment. Think about it, it uses wireless technology for competeing, it uses 2 screens, perhaps a touch screen, it uses a completley new form of storage medium.... a new system of powering the console.

The DS is a console filled with Nintendo experimenting with hardware.

It may not sell well, it doesn't appeal to the average joe after all. But what if those who own the console, those who discuss on the net or in magazines... describe it as an undiscoverd gem... those who own it find the new hardware ideas just out of this world.

Now lets move onto the N5, Xenon and PS3. Xenon are hyping a faster, better, cooler online system... Sony have an improved online mode, better graphics... larger storage medium. In fact both consoles simply show off their power and strength. What can Nintendo do to beat this?

How about a downloadable storage medium for games? How about wireless technology for everything? How about a screen in built in the controller... the GBA-GC connection "cheap" version... the IQue is a console that fits into a controller after all. And that screen happens tp be touch screen. What if the DS is a stepping stone to the N5, an experimental system to see how well the new ideas go down rather than Nintendo putting their eggs into one basket.

Doesn't sound so silly now does it. The DS is Nintendo's new console of ideas. Iwati repeatidly says that he doesn't expect it to sell well, Yamauchi stated Nintendo won't go bankcrupt. If the ideas don't go down well Nintendo's plans are ruined, they'd be "crushed" as such... but lets be honest here, despite doubting it will sell well we can all agree it is a potentially fantastic idea can't we?

As long as the DS is a hit with those who buy it, it doesn't actually matter. But the DS can of course cause problems. Sure it doesn't matter if it sells well but will it damage the Gameboy? Well no not really, the Gameboy has already sold a massive amount, and if the DS does so well that the Gameboy is damaged what has Nintendo lost exactly? The Gameboy franchise will be re-started a year or so later... undercutting the DS... and either way Nintendo have a successful system.

What about the PSP? Well the DS, one way or another, no matter how you look at it, will do SOMETHING to the PSP. Hardcore gamers buy the DS then they'll probably not get another handheld... odd joe wants a new console... gets a DS... not a PSP. Another sale lost.

And what about the support though? Should Nintendo not be finishing products in time for 2004 rather than messing around with a new system? It is almost certain Pikmin 2's delay is because Shigsy is working on a DS game as well. BUT this has a different effect as described in a previous post... less Nintendo games ( Nintendo games being the main reason why people buy Nintendo consoles) means an increase in exclusive and multi-format third party sales such as James Bond, Harvest Moon, Starfox 2, Killer 7, Harry Potter etc.... This will please the third parties who were previously not selling well on the Gamecube.

And in the long run increase third party support.

Now Tilt and whoever else criticised the idea... NOW are you excited?

He's trying to say I went back into a thread I said I wouldn't, it's his petty, argumentative nature forcing him to post the obvious.

Of course I could point out that the troll fest I was talking about was on another forum :P

Hedfix, aren't you going a little overboard with the whole controller thing?

I've only just returned to this thread, not going back into that other troll fest.

My choice of controller for the PS2 is the Namco arcade stick. It suits me as I'm a fan of arcade games, fighters and shooters. But I also make frequent use of the Guitar Freaks and Drummania controllers.

Let's not forget the Jog-con/Neg-con! In fact, I'd say there are a greater range of controller styles available for the PS2 than any other console in history.

For the record I also find the Dualshock to be very comfortable and not in the least bit 'tatty', although I'm sure you won't accept that.

All I'm saying is that even if it doesn't sell, as long as the ideas catch on then Nintendo will be happy to implement them into their next system. An in built second screen? Downloadable N64 games onto that second screen? Wireless technology on everything, no more wires? Touch screen on the second screen...

That sounds cool to me, it'll out match the opposition and people will genuinly think that is pretty cool. Nintendo's next piece of hardware could be that next step we need to make.

I might. It all depends, really, on what they finally come up with.

As for the casual gamer always going SONY, most of the local village idiot children are playing XBox. I know their brothers.
