Just saw this at www.pczone.co.uk:

While many of us have to wait until tomorrow to get our hands on this summer's most hyped game, several people have already got their hands on a copy of Max Payne. However, its arrival has not been without its problems as a handful of users with the Windows 2000 operating system have found out.
Apparently systems with a combination of a Geforce 3 graphics card, Athlon processor and Win2K OS have been causing problems for some people playing Max Payne that has resulted in the old crash back to desktop when the game is trying to load in a new level.

Max Payne's project leader Petri Järvilehto has stated that the game has been thoroughly tested with different Geforce3/Athlon configurations and that is was developed mainly on Geforce/Win2K machines. I guess that that's supposed to mean there shouldn't be any problems. Uhuh!

Anyway, Remedy is currently assuming that it is very possible that user configuration is the cause of the problem, as it has as yet been unable to recreate the crash at its own offices. However, Petri also states that if/when Remedy does recreate the crash, it will be able to offer "fix" advice. Encouragingly he says that he doubts very much that it will involve having to patch the game.

Järvilehto's current piece of advice for Win2K users who are experiencing this crash is to download Microsoft's own Service Pack 2 for the operating system, as apparently this fixes a known issue with Win2k and 3D applications. More information on this can be found here.

Here's hoping that, come tomorrow, you won't be experiencing any of these problems yourselves, but if you do, then at least you know that Remedy is on the case and is working on a fix as we speak.

PCZone are running a demo next month.

But you'll probably be able to download one from www.pczone.co.uk before then.

I'll wait for the demo, see if a lack of 32MB's of RAM causes any problems and then buy it (if it works)!

I really want it though!

Yeah I know but I find that when I used to run them on minimum requirements, it sometimes whent (sorry forgot how to spell wheint could someone pleese remind me) back to windows, wheint jerky or loss of textures etc.

So, I try and run it on above the minimum!

Although... as you can see from my posts below... Minimum specs do allow you to run the game at a 1024x768 res with all graphical features a maximum whilst maintaining top framerates, and with ABSOLUTLY NO loss of playability

If any of you want to get it or are trying to win it, you might want to take a look at these specs before you do:

Minimum Requirements: 450MHz Pentium II Processor or equivalent CPU, 96Mb RAM, 16Mb Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Recommended System: 700MHz Intel Pentium III Processor or equivalent CPU,128Mb RAM, 32Mb Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Optimal Requirements: 1000MHz Intel Pentium III Processor or equivalent CPU, 192Mb RAM, 64Mb Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card
(from SR review)

So you should install the latest components for your graphics card, sound card etc. and download the latest version of Direct X and stuff before playing and downloading the newest patch for Max Payne from www.game-revolution.com would be a good idea too!

I havnt had a chance to get a really decent session in... but wat I've played so far is pretty sweet man! :)

Its excatly the kind of game gamers have been after for a LONG time! :)

---

also... for what its worth...

at 1024x768 ... I've shifted the filtering up to Anisotropic...

Not anti-alisaing (error message)

with aboslutly no hit to frame rate...

I've also shifted the res up to 1024x1028...

Which playes fantastically... although there is a notacable pause when 'first' happen... but overall playability is hardly hit at all...

Overall... I'd the provided minimum/reccommended/etc... specs are surprisingly a little steep...
