Variety comes in packs of 8 and which one to choose… (Sorry)

Now one thing (hopefully) even Playstation fans can accept is that when it comes to variety Nintendo give you the better options. First we have colours, the N64 has a large collection of different N64 colours, the Gameboy Color is the same and so is the Gameboy Advanced even the Gamecube will have a selection of colours to choose from.

So what I hear you cry, since when has colours had an effect on gaming, well as Tesco’s say every little helps and if you are one of those people who don’t like purple or black it is nice to be able change it. But I’m not just talking about the colours of controllers and consoles I’m also talking about your ability to choose what sort of console you want. The PS2 is expensive, this isn’t a big criticism but one thing that drives up the price is its ability to play DVD’s. If it was £100 who would want to buy a DVD player if they get a game console and DVD machine combo for cheaper?

Unfortunately people who already have a DVD player or don’t want one isn’t getting a good deal, they are paying extra and the extra they are getting is something they don’t want. Now Nintendo make a console without a DVD player to cater for the people with low budgets or don’t want a DVD player whilst Panasonic make a more expensive console for those who can afford more and want a DVD player. A nice bit of variety there.

Nintendo games also show a lot of variety, they tend to be unashamedly cute but if you like Racing, Golf, Board games, platformers, RPG’s, Beat ‘em ups and puzzle games you can get a Mario game! It is quite amazing how Nintendo can make so many different types of games to cater for so many different peoples tastes involving a fat Italian plumber! Smash Brothers is a great example of Nintendo’s variety as you can compare Nintendo’s big name characters and discover how different they are.

So should we see more Variety in games? Is Variation in colours important? Will we be able to pick and choose graphic and sound chips to suit our budget much like a PC’s in the future? What do you think?

Here’s to the future

Err... not being funny, but wouldn't people just choose "good"?

No, it's just that I don't agree with Nintendo's quality over quantity attitude. They should let whatever games they want come out, instead of restricting them. Nintendo can release their "good" games, and sod whatever else comes along. Choice is always a factor.

So instead of getting an excellent RPG youd get a bad one.

That is probably the most pathetic (not being nasty) comment you have made!

At least I had the freedom to buy a bad game if I wanted to, and some bad games appeal to fans of the genre. I'd pick quantity over quality anyday.

you dont call 11 a large choice? well its a heck of an improvement from the N64, thats for sure. there was only like less than 5 titles for the first few months.

besides, the PS2 had a situation where a few games sold loads and the rest only sold a handful and made little or no profit.

No, I don't call 18 (11 really) a large choice. It doesn't really cater for all genres, does it. I'm not rich either but I like a bit of variety and although I too only bought 1 game for my PS2 initially, I still like a few options. When the PS2 was launched it had about 32 games of which 6 looked like good purchases. Out of the 18 I see for the GC, only Waverace catches my eye. How pathetic. Apparently it's not even going to be that good either.

Nintendo need to get their butts in gear and sort this out. More games are needed. More advertising is needed. More mature games are needed. Nintendo can't just expect this to go well for them like it has before. They've got some serious opposition here and if they don't take a more pro-active attitude to it they're going to be left behind again. I respect Nintendo for the following it has. Apparently there are lots of people that will follow them everywhere and one or two that would die for them. Those die-hards aren't enough though. The market's an awful lot bigger these days, and loads of people will be wanting to buy their first console after seeing the popularity of the PlayStation and N64, and the sad fact is Nintendo just aren't pulling them. If they want to touch this new markt they're going to have to do better than a handful of Nintendo-style adventures, 2 racers, a puzzle and another god-know-what game by the name of Pikmin.

Anyway, off to bed now. I'll carry this on tomorrow.

Night.
