The 20th century (1900-2000) has no doubt been the year of entertainment with inventions like the wireless, television, computer to name a few but it has also been the year of war with nuclear and atomic bombs and tanks.

I was interested in which invention of last century you considered the most important and why..

The invention of the transistor in 1947, from Bell laboratories (part of AT&T).

The transistor, the name coming from ‘Trans-Resistance’ initially got little attention from the rest of the world, but one member of the developing team, Bill Shockley saw the potential within the device and formed his own company, hiring the most talented individuals available.

But his work ethic and ego drove many away, including Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, who founded the Intel Corporation, who along with Texas Instruments invented the integrated circuit.

Shockleys company is considered to be the start of Silicon Valley.

Pretty important if you ask me.
