The 20th century (1900-2000) has no doubt been the year of entertainment with inventions like the wireless, television, computer to name a few but it has also been the year of war with nuclear and atomic bombs and tanks.

I was interested in which invention of last century you considered the most important and why..

The reason France and Russia are against this is because it makes the US an even bigger supper power. We do not mind as we have cleaverly sided with the US (however much we dislike the yanks, we have to be practical and realiase that they will win WW III).

This plan is needed as other countries are now going nuclear. These coutries are not respectable high powered nations like UK, US, France and even Ruassia (or USSR really). These new small coutries could cause a third world war and we need to be able to control them.

Imagine this:

Iraqi fires it's only nuke at the UK. We retaliate with a load of nukes. Sadams friends do not like this and so send more bombs on us and the US. 30 mins later and 6000 odd nukes are flying towards major population centres.

OK now if we had an anti-missile defence system we could have shot down that first nuke. Then could have invaded Iraqi and stopped them from getting more nukes or something like that.

If Superman was here, none of this would be necessary.

Where have all the heroes gone?

Well last weeks test says otherwise, although the two prior tests were failures. With another test planned for December against multiple warheads and decoys, the real power of the system will be proven.

I fail to understand the massive objection some countries have to it, thankfully the UK seems on course to agree to it. France, Germany and Russia all are against it, but to them and other opposers, I pose this question ; Who does the international community look to in times of war to intervene ? America. Without the Americans Saddam would be sitting on the Kuwati oil fields, Grenada would be a different place, UN missions would be unviable, The Falklands campaign would have lasted longer and our losses would have been greater, the Balkans would be an even worse mess. Its about time a lot of people realised the Cold War is over, its a new world but not a peaceful one, yet. Star Wars will bring us one step closer.

Having said the Cold War is over, there are UK, US and Norweigan ships all around the Russian recovery operation of the Kursk ! Ah well.... :)

Without it history would be very different !

I would probably have to agree. Many people see the atomic bomb as very terrifying as they worry that one could go off and destroy the world. However, they really aren't bad. If we think of how many notable atomic bombs have gone off and killed people we are talking about two.. just two. Sure they were terrible when they happened killing hundreds of Japanese people as well as carrying harmful long term effects but it was worth it and it was the right thing to do.

People may think I'm evil - I talked about this is a History class in year 9. I was one of two people in the class who though the atomic bomb should have been dropped on Hiroshima while the rest of the class were against it. Sure it was terrible when it happened - I can see that but I feel it was the most important thing to do. The Japanese who didn't have the technology had been fighting the US for months and killing people again and again (the US were also doing the same). The war was still on - and it could have gone on for much longer. The US bombed the Japanese once and the world was shocked as this bomb has never been seen before and lots of people died. However, the Japanese didn't surrender - it was only after the devestating second that they decided it was time to give up. Although this was very deadly and lots of people were hurt think of it's effects. It stopped the war between Japan without a doubt. However the atomic/hydrogen bombs also did something that they were not originally meant to do. What they did was stop future wars. Where countries like Japan may have wanted revenge more or less straight after World War 2 they couldn't as the USA had the technology and they didn't and they knew that if they did start a war they would be humilated and maybe destroyed. Also even longer when other countries discovered the technology no country would attack another country with atomic bombs as they would also suffer. So what we have is a stalemate. I doubt any of the atomic bombs on this Earth will be used to start wars - the dangers are too great. And I think the Star Wars Plan being worked on by the US is another step foward and I'm hailing this new technology. If you don't know this Star Wars PLan is to stop missiles from hitting their targets by destroying them safely before they can make contact. This is another great step foward as like the atomic bomb soon lots of people will have the technology and in the long term this could lead to superior technology that in the event of an atomic bomb being fired we might be able to defend ourselves.

God bless the atomic bomb!

I would agree with Goatboy and say the Internet.

Don't forget, we could also say computers, or just microchips, or even the PlayStation 2!

Nah, even I wouldn't go that far.

I'm going to be all controversial and say the atom bomb in 1944. It changed everything from the moment Openheimer's team knew it would work, and what it was capable of. It shaped that conflict by providing a means of victory, then the next 50 years and onwards.

Without it history would be very different !
