I'm doing some personal research into stigma and such and I would like to ask a question.

Without looking it up on wikipedia or anywhere, can you describe to the best of your ability what schizophrenia actually is?

Don't worry about if you think you're wrong, and please, do check up after you answer the question if you want to, but I'm just interested in public perception of what the illness actually is. And don't just say the same as another person who you think might have the right answer, I want to know what you personally believe.

I hope I get quite a few replies here, thank you if you have a go.

That's how it goes though. A large chunk of GCSE science is fairly wrong and only students who go on to take the A-level equivalent really find out about it. :D

The basics can equal 'over-simplification' but there are time, interest and aptitude issues to take into account.

This thread is quite depressing. Chaos, you need a new teacher.

Funny you should ask, we just covered the basics of this in psychology.

It's something to do with the cognitive mind, splitting into two, or possibly more different arrays of thought. Where one or all may become significant enough to disrupt your daily routine.

Along those lines anyway.

I guess these lyrics here would be a pretty damn uninformed view of schizophrenia, with dark humour aplenty... either way, it's a great song!

Also commonly used to insult people (mainly teenagers upon teenagers) when they get annoying or weird or in my case... two-faced :D

Suffice to say, many people (probably the majority) will get the actual definition of schizophrenia a bit askew. The average Joe doesn't know how to categorise "psycho" into proper psychoanalytic definatives; hence, the broad range usage of the word.

It goes something like this...

You wig out in a public establishment. You're psycho.

You have beliefs that something (anything for that matter) is, but it truly isn't.. You're psycho.

Someone else talking in your brain that you can't control??? You're psycho.

I think you get the jist. I know it may seem a bit daft, but not everyone is as well-read about the matter, as you are Grix Thraves.

edit: Pft, whatever..

If it's what I think it is: it's split personality thingy... And can be very funny going by the film Me, Myself and Irene :P
