Sega will release another console. At least, that's what I think and as I work for Sega Europe, I should know.

Sega has plans to release a 1024 bit console in 2008. They are currently around 40% of the ay through the basic design and implementation stage.

Sega hopes to ship the dev kits in 2006, giving all developers 2 years to create a number of games for launch. Sega wants a similtaneous worldwide luanch for the new console, tentatively named DarkStar.

As the console is still in the design stage, no definate hardware has been decided upon. Sega are aiming for 256MB RAM, a 40GB hard drive, ethernet connection, 4 controller ports, as well as a 2 machine link up.

Sega knows this console will take off as, in the next 5 years, they're going to release some "Kick ar$e software to drill it into everytone that we CAN make wicked games." By the time the DarkStar is released, everyone will associate Sega with top quality software, and will want to continue playing these titles, so they will buy the DarkStar.

Currently, 75% of all software companies have sighed up to develop for the console, including EA, who were notably absent from the DC's developer list.

Sega are currently working, closely and secretly, with Nintendo, on some cross platform internet games to play on the DarkStar and Nintendo's next project.

Sega are also working closly with the major European telephone companies to ensure broadband is available to EVERYONE by 2008.

All in all, the future's looking bright.

:-)

But with games save, online updates, extra levels, etc...

Given that the machine isnt released for another 7 years...

Think back 7 years ago... was the PS1 even released then?

What were the machine specs like then?

The SNES, etc... were still going strong...

To have compnents like a 40GB HD which are the same spec as machines which are to be released 6+ years older than SEGAs new machine seems a little foolhardy?

Surely thats up to SEGA to sort out... telecomms peeps provide the line... SEGA have to do everything else?

Its just that the spec sounds remarkably familiar to the one I read about from SEGA a year or two back, before they knew the DC was going to flop, when they were stateing their intended design for the next spec machine (exept with a lower bit rate (256) processor)

As I said. The specs are not laid out for definate yet.

Also, it won't need a huge HDD. It's going to use DVD's, but it uses a blue laser to read the disc. The wavelength of blue light is shorter than red, so the tracks on the disc can be closer together.

If the tracks on the disc are closer togther then the disc can hold more information, upto 45GB or something.

Also, Sega are working with telecomms providers to utilise the lessons they learned when programming and setting up PSO for the DC.

If its ot a hoax... then the spec of the console seems odd...

Though, given the popularity of console makers to up the bit rate of the console to make it seem more advanced...

That they are using only 256MB RAM... and a 40GB hard drive, seems a bit limiting for the type of games we can expect in 2008

Also the idea of SEGA working with cable companies to provide Broadband seems a little unusual... They may be offering advice and help... however, I would have thought that their influence oin an area of telecommunications still geared toward business use would have been minimal

Thing is, at the moment, Sega only seem to be doing conversions for the PS2.

No original stuff so far anyway.

If sega kept it quiet as long as possible, they'd probably give Sony a little trouble by suddenly s**topping developing games for them!

That gives Sega a chance to nip into the market again, while Sony recovers the rate of game releases!

Mind you, sony never have a problem releasing game after game, even though al lot of them are sh*t!
