Not the game thing whereby houses suddenly appear and previously invisible mountains hove into sight.

I'm talking about pop-up ads.
Those nasty little things that.er..pop-op whenever you visit some sites.
2 of my favourite sites now have these as a means of generating revenue.
Except, every single person on the forums are complaining.

Rightfully so.
I detest pop-up ads. I loathe advertising anyway, but recognise it as a necessary evil.
However, when I am faced with promotional windows that appear whether I want them to or not, then it galls me.

I'm glad SR don't use these, and I pray they don't do.
Because, far from generation revenue, a lot of people choose to not visit that site anymore.
I can no longer visit one site, and whenever I go there, 4 seperate windows open up that I have to close.

I'd rather go somewhere else than have garish adverts on my computer, thankyouverybloodymuch.

Imagine if your TV had a similar thing, you left the room to make a cuppa and ads appeared on your kettle and on the side of the fridge.
You'd get fed up with it, advertisers chasing you and making you sit and watch them.

Here's an idea, if I am interested in a product, I will search it out. Do not subject me to forced advertising or I'm going somewhere else.

Thanks for listening to me rant.
Again.

I hate pop-up windows just for ads as well. I don't mind SR, because the ads don't pop-up in a new window. They're just little flashy pictures at the top of the page.

Advertising is neccessary, though highly annoying. If there wasn't advertising, only a few companies would survive. You could only get a loan from one company. Only one place could sell PS2's, and the world would become boring. Simple.

Budweiser is another one that is about selling the name.
That irritating catchphrase that the entire world used for a while - you know the one and I won't repeat it.

There have been spoofs on the net of superheroes doing it, old people, animals.

The Bud Ad execs should earn a massive bonus for that, because you hear that and "Hey! Bud!" springs into your mind.

Disgraceful tactics, and it's 2:33am and I'm at work in 6hrs.
I should really turn my head off.

Rakuga, you made a good point about Coke and McDonalds.

You should seek out a book called No Logo by Naomi Klein.
It's all about that sort of thing.
They aren't selling you their product, the reason they spend so much on constantly advertising is to reinforce the brand name in your mind.

Not to sell you anything new, but to make sure that they stay at the forefront of your mind.
You do what I do, and what everyone else does, they ask for "Coke".
Why? It's not called that, but you say that and everyone knows the red can with the logo, or you'd say "Pepsi".
A lot of serious companies, the major conglomerates use this tactic to sell the brand/logo as opposed to a product.

The one that made me realise just how phony and pointless this whole "logo "deal was is Tommy Hillfigger.
You know that brand name, Ali G wears that stuff.
Except Hillfigger is not a designer. He buys production line clothes and puts his name on them.
Seriously, he has designed exactly 0 lines of clothing, he merely sticks his name on, and people buy it.
They're buying the name, the logo, not the product.

Happens all the time, it's not even about selling you a product now, it's about making sure you know the name and the logo.
Think about how many companies are recognisable by the logo.

Nike,McDonalds, Coke, Adidas...these companies strive to achieve "brand recognition", which means they dont need to worry about actually creating anything you can hold in your hands, it's all about the name.

People can't help but fall victim to this insidious technique, half the time you're not even aware of it.
But please, everyone do me one favour today or tomorrow.
When you go shopping, or are just out with a lot of people, look at them and see how many are wearing logos.

They are advertising boards for corporations. They are doing the part of pop-up ads, commercials, billboards, they have all adopted a company logo as their own, wear it like a badge of pride.

This makes me sad/angry that someone would sacrifice their identity to spend their time as a walking advert.
Seriously, check out the next time you go out just how many people are selling a logo on their clothes.

Pop up adverts aren't so bad.

ONce I was searching for games to download.

A site popped up. A porn site.

I closed it, unamused.

4 further windows opened up... porn.

I closed them to find that for every one I closed, 3-5 new ones popped up.

This lead to a frantic bashing of Alt+F4.

Stay away from obsecure sites. They're a real nuisance!
