Not the game thing whereby houses suddenly appear and previously invisible mountains hove into sight.

I'm talking about pop-up ads.
Those nasty little things that.er..pop-op whenever you visit some sites.
2 of my favourite sites now have these as a means of generating revenue.
Except, every single person on the forums are complaining.

Rightfully so.
I detest pop-up ads. I loathe advertising anyway, but recognise it as a necessary evil.
However, when I am faced with promotional windows that appear whether I want them to or not, then it galls me.

I'm glad SR don't use these, and I pray they don't do.
Because, far from generation revenue, a lot of people choose to not visit that site anymore.
I can no longer visit one site, and whenever I go there, 4 seperate windows open up that I have to close.

I'd rather go somewhere else than have garish adverts on my computer, thankyouverybloodymuch.

Imagine if your TV had a similar thing, you left the room to make a cuppa and ads appeared on your kettle and on the side of the fridge.
You'd get fed up with it, advertisers chasing you and making you sit and watch them.

Here's an idea, if I am interested in a product, I will search it out. Do not subject me to forced advertising or I'm going somewhere else.

Thanks for listening to me rant.
Again.

Ah, but does it work that way? Case in point...

I'm not particularly fussed about which one I drink, but I do have a preference for Coca Cola over Pepsi.

I hate it when I go into a shop, ask for a Coke, and they give me a Pepsi. If I wanted either, I'd ask for a 'cola'.

Obviously some people are either immune to the advertising, or simply dense! ;-)

Rakuga, please please please do me a favour:

Go and buy No Logo by Naomi Klein, it's saying everything that you've raised here.
And get hold of some Bill Hicks material on CD, you'd love him.

Trust me

It's still a disgrace I don't think I'll ever forget the name coke. On the other hand companies like COke are hiring Christina Aquileria and Britney Spears to advertise. What a waste of bloody money I'm not going to buuy coke just because they drink it..

Why you........

anyway, its true. Adverts help people decide where to buy their goods.

If there were no adverts, eventually, one by one, companies would go out of buisness.

There would only be one place to buy each thing!

Although, I doubt getting rid of pop up would take it that far!

And there are programs available (mostly shareware) that eliminate all pop up, or claim to!

No idea but I like it, it allows you to look at it if you want to, it's not clogging my screen with adverts for rubbish

Why can't the lists of pop-up windows showing GAD and FAD windows be in the normal browser window? Why do they have to be in a pop-up window?

And I (and Rakuga and Wookie) pray it stays this way.

Pop-Ups are a sure fire way to lose quite a lot of people from a site.
But SR didnt announce they would be doing it, I just wanted to rant about how annoying they are.
