"Disgaea: Hour of Darkness"

I noticed that a lot of people have been talking about this game recently and I thought that it would be good to have your opinions of it. Lalakersrule says that he has clocked up 800 hours on it so either it is very very addictive or Lalakersrule is extremely sad. ;-) Anyway, I was looking through the latest issue of Official Playstation Two Magazine and I saw a preview of it and to my horror it only had a quarter of a page when GTA: San Andreas had six pages on it! So I looked down and saw why. 2D graphics!!! I know that it has sold millions in Japan and other countries but I never thought that it would have Two-dimesional graphics. I am not saying that graphics are the most important part of a game but I expected a game that had sold so well to have at least half-decent graphics for god's sake. But I still think that after so many good reviews there is quite a large chance of me buying it when it comes out over here.

So what do you guys think of it? I don't want people saying stuff like 'oh yeah, it sounds good'. I want people who have imported it to give me a first-hand review and help me out.

There's no spoilers in there that gives away a major chunk of the story. The only thing spoiler like is the fact you meet Flonne which isn't exactly giving the whole story away

Yes it does. It is about a young demon prince called Laharl who has awoken from a 2 year nap to find his father has died and the title of Overlord of the Netherworld has become vacant. The story follows his quest to claim the title and the people he meets along the way which includes an angel called Flonne who was sent to assasinate the king 2 years too late. Here we have a secondary storyline running along as we see how hard it is for her, an angel, to adjust to the Demon world but she soon realises as she experiences life in the demon world that maybe the demon and angel worlds aren't as different as she thought they were. However her bosses are a little miffed she hasn't come back.


The storyline is very humourous then what you'd usually get with an RPG (the prinny's are a highlight.......dood!!!) although it does get a little more serious towards the end.

Call me crazy and from the old school of gaming but i prefer to place gameplay over graphics and Disgaea has the best gameplay of any game i've ever played. It is very bloody addicting and i can't get enough of it (as is shown by the 800 hours of gameplay (logged over about 7 months so it's not sad really) and is alot more fun then the very average FFX and it's cheap cash in of a sequel. In short Disgaea is probably the best RPG available right now. However because it doesn't have flashy graphics and has gameplay that requires you to use your brain and think, it's going to scare the moronic gamers away whose sole basis of judging a game is how pretty the explosions and graphics look. But after saying all that i think the graphics are very polished and look very nice actually but then i did prefer my sprites over polygon characters.

And as for the column inches alot more people are aware of GTA then they are of Disgaea so it's quite sensible on behalf of the magazine to devote more space to GTA. If we went by the actual quality of the games though Disgaea deserves it's own magazine

Cusack, if you didn't have such a strong opinion on playing import games, you could try Suikoden 3 on the PS2. 60-80hrs quality play time, but only available in the USA.
