So what do these numbers mean? Is it Sony beginning original? Couldn't be bothered to make a name up? Or does it have a real meaning?
The Playstation 2 has, the same controller as the Playstation, the same logo, (the PS thing), many games from the Playstation (sequels). So does the name have a meaning?... YES!
The Playstation 2 is a sequel console. It is a upgrade of the Playstation; it has games like Tekken, Grand Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and more. So has the upgrade worked? Yes, it has worked, but if it wasn't backwards compatible it wouldn't be able to (in the words of er-no) ride the success of the Playstation so they can get though these bad times. A good example of this Syphon Filter 3 is coming out on the Playstation 1 not 2, and why is this? I leave it to you. I have a friend who has a Playstation 2, the game he plays the most is Smackdown 2.
Have you ever closed your eyes whilst playing the Playstation 2? The games feel like there the same, no real new experience there, shame really cause the games could be a lot better. I mean, Time Splitters is a good game and all, but it just doesn't feel new. When I first saw Goldeneye, I couldn't believe my eyes. 3-D graphics like I have never seen before. James Bond walking that famous walk, Facility was truly life like. This was a new experience I have never felt like that ever, until Zelda (I won’t go on)
Te name has been done before. Sega did it. Instead of doing a Nintendo and bringing an expansion pak out, they brought a upgraded console out. The Megadrive 2. Any similarities in the name?
I am not dissing the PS2, the games I have played, and the games coming out which I have seen on the game network (and read about in ukgames.com) look promising, but at the moment. It’s just a upgrade. I wanted a new console, like the Gamecube or X-Box. So Sony needs to make the Playstation 3 much more than just a upgrade. Because the Playstation 2 isn't a big enough jump (at the moment) to call it a next generation console.

Come to think of it, he might have ADHD.
*drooool*
Oh and I didn't say it was bad i think it is ace but a new one would be nice and they could still stick in the old controllers for the old games.
Still, most consoles have a vast selection of 3rd-party peripherals available, so it doesn't really matter!
Remember those Princes Trust discs that came out for charity on the PSX? With the picture of the bandaged and bloody hands on the cover? Those were my hands.
> A next Gen system needs to feel new and fresh!
It's a fair point, but again depends on how you look at it.
True, a new system with a new controller etc. may be exciting, new and fresh.
But familiarity also has its own attractions - you've spent years getting used to a controller... the 'new' one feels natural, and you don't have to ger used to a new feel.
Also, the controllers had to be pretty much the same to enable true backwards compatibility.
You can get Bleem! for the Dreamcast, but you can't play all the games unless you get an adapter and PS1 controller, because the DC controller has two less buttons.
Changing the configuration of PS2's controllers, or even just the symbols used, would have caused all sorts of confusion when playing PS1 games.
but seriously as Simon said it feels like wht
> the megadrive 2 was to the Megadrive, same console new stuff!
Are you serious? Do you actually think that the PS2 is THAT similar to the PS1?
Also,What's wrong with the PS1/ PS2 pad? I think despite there apparent lack of difference they are a good design.
If it ain't broke don't fix it and all that jazz!
The PS2 does feel and seem much like the PS1.
A next Gen system needs to feel new and fresh!
The GC has fresh new games evern the old ones re-done will feel, act and paly differently and why?
Because of the Controller it adds a new spin on gaming! Makes games feel original and new which is my heavy criticism of the PS2.
The Controller is the same, oh yeah more presure points etc... but where are the new innovotive design to it? Something that could bring gaming into the next generation? I love learning a new system it feels like a new consoel meanwhile why Syphon Filter 4 (when it comes out) could have the same control system and apart from the gorgeous new graphics and new options the game will feel and )unless they change the system) play the same.
It wont on the GC as it will feel differnet literally with a new controller!
Another why only 2 controller ports? Why? The N64 gained a load of support as people and 3 friends who might not have a 64 would play on it and so the 64 would spread! But the PS2 doesn't and why? Becasue they can sell more for the Multi tap.
I do like the PS2 i do but seriously as Simon said it feels like wht the megadrive 2 was to the Megadrive, same console new stuff!
