Erm, compared to the Dreamcast which is also 128-bit, I was wondering, just WHY IS the PS2 so great? What makes it so different to the Dreamcast?

(Arguments with the words DVD in them will be ignored, I already have a DC and a DVD player thankyou.)

Turbo, what genre of game is Monkey Island 4? I always thought that the Monkey Island games were point and click adventures.

"can" being the operative word.

At the moment there is nothing on PS2 that looks better than MSR, Shenmue or F355.

I have made this choice and I chose the PS2. The DC is dead (although I didn't know that) but it's blatently obvious the PS2 is more powerful. There have been enough "AAA" titles to keep me very interested in it and now the flow is increasing. This month we have GT3, Red Faction, Monkey Island 4 and Rumble Racing. You can ask Wookiee what is next month as he's already got the magazine, the little ghet.

No it was not so shhhh.

Dan2K1, I said it was harder to make games for PS2.

I read somewhere that the DC can handle 3 million polygons per second whereas the PS2 can handle 75 million polygons per second. Is this true? It sounds like a massive difference but then if you look at games like Ecco the Dolphin and MSR, there's not that much difference between these graphics and the graphics on PS2.

If you compare the playstation 2 and Dreamcast on the terms of how powerful they are then there isn't much difference, as you said they are both 128bit consoles. I think the main reason ps2 is liked more is because of how well the original Playstation sold. Also less people will be buying dreamcasts now as sega have decided to produce software for other consoles such as the Gamecube and Gameboy Advanced. I think that the ps2 will be the most popular of the next generation consoles including the XBox, cos even thogh the XBox will be more powerful i think that the ps2 will remain more popular with the public thus resulting in more sales.

P.S. Does anyone know roughly how much the XBox will cost when it is released.

So, if you've already got a DVD player, is it worth spending £249 on a PS2 or £99 on a Dreamcast?

The PS2 games have better graphics, more sensitive controls, and in the future they will have a HDD. The future being around Christmas.

More importantly though, with the PS2 you can guarantee games will still be being made. The DC has ceased production and so will the games very soon.

Right... as I understand it you are asking why, although both 128bit, the PS2 is supposidly "better" than the DC.

Well, put it like this. the "bit number" of the console is useless. What IS important is the speed of the processor. The PS2 has a faster processor.

In addition to this, the way the chips in a console are laid out and connected is also very important. (Tech word: Architecture of the console). This is where the PS2 seems to be having problems. Whereas the DC uses a PC-style layout, the PS2 has gone for a more radical approach that will be harder to master. As a result it is "HARDER" to make PS2 games than it is to make DC games (was it Dan2k who said otherwise???), and at the moment PS2 and DC games are on par...

In fact, all of the above is useless. What matters is THE GAMES. And it is an undeniable fact that currently the DC has a broader range of excellent AAA games as well as some great original new titles. That *should* change when the PS2 developers get used to the console... by which time the Gamecube and Xbox will be out :)
