Well it's sure been a long time!

What with paintball, setting up my own business, working really hard at the day job and basically just not having a 2 minutes to rub together I have neglected my gaming duties and this forum - not that I posted much anyways - less is more in some cases I guess.

But...but... last week I dug out Metroid Prime and decided it was gonna get finished, whether I did it in 5 minute bits or not. I really struggled with it when it came out, being an FPS man born and bred, cutting my teeth on Castle Wolfenstein (the ORIGINAL!!) through to perfecting the rocket jump in Quake 3, playing COD and whooping like an idiot when I took the Nazi HQ (classic moment)*sigh* what was i to do with this weird control system??

Grit my teeth and bear it! It's probably been said a million times. Get over the controls and this game is pure gold. With diamonds. The first time you look over phendrana, to the shriek of the chozo ghost...even watching the water drops spatter on your visor...Brilliance. I think I speak for all who loved it that seeing samus' reflection in the visor was a defining moment.

It's weird the feeling you get playing it - it's like a continuous wonder, mixed with some trepidation about what is around the corner. Every location is great.

The graphics are still marvelous. The environments are large, detailed, and in my opinion outshine those of Halo's (barring some technical bits. I played all the way through and completed - so a qualified opinion this is) for variety and attention to detail. Ok their not bump mapped, real time self shadowed or level 2 pixelshaded and to a large extent don't use things that make games like doom 3 and far cry awesome to look at but...I realised last night that there is a physics model applied to the pirates.

It appears they have rag doll behaviour. I would not have thought it but when I shot a pirate down from a ledge he tumbled and bounced realistically. I tried this on other pirates on slopes and steps and things (I wanted to make sure it wasn't an animation). The first time I saw this in Unreal II I was really impressed. To know this was included in Prime - when the render engine in UII was such a beast - is really impressive.

Anyhoo - I am loving this game. Going through a difficult patch in the Phazon mines but it's challenging rather than frustrating. I am in the Prime bubble now (you know what I mean, when you get into a game boots and all) which is a bit sad - but anyone else who has played recently, is playing or will play it soon - pass some comments...it would be great to hear about the bits that you enjoy.

Laters (for another 6 months perhaps ;o)

Damnit! I hated that bit.

I got there after about 2 hours without a save point and the biitch goes and wipes me out without me having a clue what to do.
That really broke my momentum with the game there, and it didn't quite flow so well for me after that.

But hey. :-)

Have you got the upgrade for the Rockets + Wave Beam combination?
You know, that weird beam.

That wipes it out, and then you're treated straight to a save point, and more, but the rest is a surprise! :-)

Yeah well - I was fairly knackered and unfortunately messing about in the vertical tunnels on the spider track got me thumped by the rotating walls. Then pirate after pirate...and I got to the drone with 2 tanks left. Just fooling about trying to scan the damn thing and figure what to do cost me a tank.

Thanks whitestripes - I have the wavebuster. I got it before the grav suit. Will use that. Then, ooooh yes...mine all mine the power bomb is! yes!

You need the grapple beam to get the expansion under the ice, you have to blow up one of those chunks in the ceiling so it falls down and smashes it.

Also the cloaked drone is incredibly simple if you just use the wavebuster, seeing as it locks on when fired in an enemies general direction.

arg! I just tried to load my pre-Meta ridley Metroid save file, but it doesn't even seem to exist, accoring to the game!

My memory card manager has 5 different copies of the save, all on different memory cards, but Prime won't even recognise one of them.

What the hell is going on?!

Ive just bought it. I thought, well if echoes is going to be the game of the century I thought I might aswell get to grips with the first one.

After I completed the space station I was a little unsure whether I liked it or not, as the controls are a bit dodgy and the graphics arnt the best ive seen, But when I landed down on the planet and the metroid theme tune started to play very slowly in the background I got all tinglely and set of insearch of my missing parts...

Cheers for the advice. That sort of whum whum sound the upgrade makes when you are near it sets me off like a bloodhound! Indeedy - no upgrades get away from me (well most don't) - except that teaser missile expansion in the lake under the ice. Methinks a power bomb perhaps? Or shooting out the rock on the ceiling so it smashes the ice....hmmm?

The problem was I died before reaching the save point after the cloaked drone...so my guess is I gotta do the whole shebang again - with loads more pirates in the mix. Grrr!

Damn cloaked drone riled me up good and proper.

While your in Phazon mines I suggest looking everywhere for your Rocket capacity thingermies, as the Mines are a real biznitch to get back to once you've left.

How are you guys doing with MP - errgh I got my ass kicked by that stupid cloaked drone in the power bomb room after taking some punishment from those damn rotating tunnel rings (it was late). I couldn't belive how desperate I was for a save point...I practically wet myself when that Elite bust his tank open. Hehe serves me right for playing with earphones at a silly volume.

Who's a pricess then tphi? eh?

I've got it.

It's pretty good.
Very simplistic compared to Super Metroid, but the first time we Samus was as we know her now (anyone who's played the Nes original will know that the first Samus was very different).

Super Metroid on the Snes is the one to own though.
THE classic. :-)
