What do people think of this new hand-held endevour? Is it going to over saturate the hand-held market?
Soon we'll have the GBA, GBA-SP, NDS, PSP, Gizmondo, and GBA2... meh, toooo many!
:)
The GBA SP has a tonne of titles still set for release, the software for the DS is very different.
The GBP was starting to fall in terms of sales...
Why would Nintendo replace a console that is currently the biggest seller worldwide.
There won't be a follow up to the GBA whilst the DS is on the scene. But the SP will be cheap, it will play simplistic games at very attractive prices and ideal for on the go gaming.
Nintendo may end up discontinuing the SP if the sales for it fall so much.
But I bet the sales won't fall much at all.
Even if simply because it plays SP games.
It's like the Gameboy and the Gameboy color.
Yep, the Gameboy still got a fair few games after the color came out but within two years that completely ended and all that was left was color games.
Likewise, color games were still coming out a shortwhile after the Advance came out, but no more. :-)
Since the fall of the wonderswan in Europe handheld gaming machines have been released for two reasons A: To grab the 5% Nintendo leave behind or B: To invent their own niche for the market.
The Nintendo DS is and in my eyes always will be there for 2 reasons.
1: To introduce new ideas, see which ones go down well and which ones can be implemented into the next set of hardware. For example if the means of holding games aren't popular a similar idea will not be used, but if the online service and touch screen proves to be a big hit expect an online 'revolution' with touch screen panel in the controller etc... etc...
2: To stop the PSP. Believe it or not the Gamegear remains to this day Nintendo's biggest battle. It won rather comfortably but other systems such as the N-GAGE,Wonderswan, Linux etc... fell within months.
The PSP will not fall in months, it has too much of a large backing. It is possible Nintendo's monopoly is lost against the PSP and that Nintendo are forced to "share" the market with sony. Without the fantastic profits made by the Gameboy franchise how will the company survive with losses being made in the home console market?
Analysts say the handheld market can only house 2 consoles. The NDS has the potential to BE that other console. The GBA SP will not fall, it is by far the most attractive handheld gaming device. To be honest complex gameplay in handheld games worry me. If the NDS and GBA SP sell VERY well (it is almost a done thing with the SP) then the PSP won't have a large enough share to continue in the handheld market.
And Nintendo's monopoly continues.
In theory.

Yer, it infringed on the name Gametrak which is a new peripheral which is getting released this summer!
:)

It was originally going to be called the GAMETRAC, but apparently that infringed on a copyright, so they changed it to Gizmondo. Still, a really dumb name I agree.
Then the 3rd one - arrghh, yucky.
Who cares anyway?

With only a few exceptions, the ancient cassette systems, such as Commodore and Sinclair Spectrum aren't bothered because the majority of games are classed as abandonware.
It is actually fairly difficult to find a website in English that provides full ROMs for Nintendo games. Many ROM sites I knew about in the past have actually shut down over the years. www.emunation.com was a huge ROMs site before with games for virtually anything, but suddenly closed one day.
Nintendo are concerned about piracy, but it isn't always easy to find the ROM sites that actually do provide the illegal games and I doubt they employ a team of people to continuously search the internet.
