k, got Far Cry to discover that my cd drive is incompatible
???
It suggests downloading the latest firmware from here http://www.netmag.co.uk/downloads/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=17904&subsectionid=486 and says it fixes it by "The fix works by flashing the firmware in the drive, the little chip inside that gets the drive and your PC talking to each other."
Flashing firmware?
Now I can enter a DOS session, and the readme says to do the following:

1. At DOS prompt type:

c:\flashup 1102U00B.dld /*

(Where '*' is the IDE position of the drive)
Primary Master : 0
Primary Slave : 1
Secondary Master : 2
Secondary Slave : 3
----

My question is, how do I know which IDE position my CD drive is?
Anybody help, cos I know zip about this
-----

Stuck this in the PC section but thats for games. Whoops

So did you go with a 9800 Pro in the end? Did you get the 128mb or 256mb version?

Also what sort of settings are you running the game on, resolution etc?

I struggle to run the game with very high for everything on 1024 x 768, get around 30 FPS out doors and around 80 in doors.

Only on the "training" level but it's already made me think this is a fantastic game, one of the best I've played of recent late.
Little set-pieces and moments:

Enter a carrier ship, get to top. Helicopter approaches with side-gunners firing at you. Take out the bloke on a manned machine gun and hop on.
Aim at chopper...AKKA AKKA AKKA!...gunman falls out and splashes into the ocean waaaaay below. Turn that beast on the soldiers rushing and watch them flee and take cover. Can't reach the blokes on the left? Blast the crates and watch them disintegrate/get pushed away so you can lay into them.
Find the dinghy on the side of the massive boat and jump onto it.
"Press use to push boat into water"
Press push. Boat swings about but doesn't release from it's cradle.
Press push more, more swinging.
Press push again, get annoyed because still swinging.
Fire wildly with M16, realise you just hit one of the chains holding it up. Chain snaps, end of dinghy starts to dip/fall alarmingly because now only supported by one chain and your 40ft up.
Heh, excellent...er...I'm falling into the sea now.
You're in the sea, dinghy is waaaay above you.
Curse and shoot other chain. Dinghy falls all the way to the sea, you watch it float down like in Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom at the start.
Climb in dinghy and off we go.

Fantastic.

Works like a charm with everything on high and water on ultra-high.

And deserves a slack-jawed "Wow".
The lighting effects, reflections from surfaces, shadows rippling as you crawl through the jungle, the water...and a bloody good FPS to boot.
I've replayed the 1st couple of section to use different approaches and each time is different. Physics are second to none as well, didn't even realise until I knocked over a big metal frame unit and thoughts "oops" when you hear "What the hell was that?"

10/10, even with mucho tweaking of bios settings and stuff

It took me four hours to set up Xbox Live.

I'm still not sure how it's working. :D

That's the love/hate thing with PC gaming. Far Cry at uber detail, for 4hrs messing about and new graphics cards.

It's a DVD Drive.
Having trawled through the Ubisoft support forums, I learned that my drive was incompatible unless I had updated the firmware for it.
Which entailed downloading flash tools, entering DOS and all sorts of gubbins.
However, 4hrs later I have updated, installed and ready to go with Far Cry.

With a nice Radeon 9800Pro card, 2.4 ghz, 1gig ram etc etc, should be nice.
But first a bath and some dinner

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but I could not help noticing you say "CD Drive" in the topic, is it a DVD Drive you have or a CD Drive?
