The response of the Playstation fans would be that of celebration as now they can indeed gloat to their disappointed Nintendo loving friends. Yet would the demise of one of the world’s greatest games console be a positive effect on the Playstation?
Lets go back in time, imagine if Nintendo and Rare never made it to the N64 and they had to shut down. What effect would that have on gaming? Mario 64 a revolution in it self, where would we be without the worlds most famous plumber in his amazing 3D world, how far would that set back the evolution of gaming, Zelda that has probably been the greatest influence to many games on all formats now what would some of the games be like without it not as good as they could be that is for sure.
Goldeneye! Now where would first person shooters be without it? No Timesplitters that's for sure, how far would this genre be set back before some clever designers tries to reshape the first person shooter genre in the way Goldeneye did.
Now back to the present what could we be missing out on if the Gamecube fails and Nintendo force to shut their doors for the last time? We may never know which is why I say long live Nintendo because many of us may not think you are the best (I do though) but everyone will have to agree they have helped make gaming what it is today and will help make it what will be.

If they left the gaming market all together, or chose to concentrate on the handheld market, then companies like they would no doubt sell their stake in companies like Rare, Retro Studios, and Silicon Knights. As a result of this many of Nintendo's second party titles would simply appear on other consoles.
People like Miyamoto would not be satisfied working only on handhelds, so would go to work for other companies, still creating the great games they would have brought to Nintendo. Though maybe they wouldn't be allowed to be as creative, or take some of the risks with gameplay like Nintendo may choose too. For instance would any other company allow time to develop. For instance Nintendo allowed Rare an absolute age to produce Conker, and let them re-invent it completely into something quite original. Would another platform have taken this risk?
We don't know for sure what would have happened, but all of the talent that Nintendo has would be kept in the loop. They'd just be making games for somebody else.
What I should say though is without Nintendo there would be no PlayStation, at least not as we know it. This would have been great (yes, I am still a Sony fan) because Sega would have been the only company left and they would have ruled the market.
My loyalties always lay with Sega but they made crap hardware so I attached to Sony instead. They were the nearest I could get to Sega and it turns out my choice was a good one.
