I've just read the one bit of news about PS2, that is going to make everyone want one. It's not MGS2 but the PS2 online capability. I personally didn't really care at the start of the PS2 if it was online or not, but after reading this article i'm really excited. First of all the Hard drive and online capabilty are going to be seperate, you don't need one to use the Other. Secondly you will be able to use the modom through a normal telephone line and not just a digital line. However the most exciting thing is how quickly it's going to arrive. Sony want the Modom in Europe by 2002 with a number of online games, and this is not an unrealistic target. The Hardware is nearly completed, and sony have combinded with AOL to create a sutible web browser. Now you may well dissmiss this saying the Dreamcat was meant to be online and look at the state of that. However their is one crucial difference, online games are already in the pipeline. Tony Hawkes 3is online as well as SOCOM Navy seals and Tribes 2 and by the end of 2002 sony hopes that all games will have an online element. Just imagine the possibilities skating round a park with someone from Germany and abuse messages scrolling on the bottom of the screen or Downloading a new car on the GT3 web site or a new weapon on the FF11 (Final Fantasy). The possibilites are endless withe the Hard drive as well hopefully ending in you being able to download whole games straight into the machine. At the end of the day this is an incredinly useful tool, but will have to be exploited by the Games companies who will have the final so, but so far things are looking good.

A game could be affected by having the disc refer to the hard drive for content in a similar way to how the PS2 searches for a memory card. Obviously any game using this will need to have the feature built in.

As for what damage a virus could do, well Sony have talked about releasing upgrades to the hardware drivers haven't they ? This msut mean the memory chip or whatever it is that stores the drivers for the PS2 for things like DVD must be flash upgradeable in a similar way to some PC modems. Basically it means that a program can overwrite the old driver and replace it with itself. Various PC viruses attempt to do things like overwrite the Bios for a pc motherboard so theres no reason a similar virus couldn't be targetted at PS2.

On hte online gaming thing I agree with Base to some degree. Unless Sony sets up safeguards then it will be like hell let loose. I'd say the best way for Sony to make sure the online experience of PS2 gamers isnt like the PC one would be to mail out cards to all registered PS2 users who then return them to Sony, Sony then gives the owner a password and username to access the service and things like email e.t.c can then be sorted out online once initial registration is complete. I've tried numerous PC games online and found the experience to be highly annoying and generally unenjoyable !

How can a game be effected? It will be on DVD or a CD and on a PS2 it cant be written too.

Would Sony actually beable to get rid of any virus threats as somebody could make PS2 only viruses that could be downloaded on to the memory card or HDD? The worst that could happen would be losing all your saved files and saved games but nothing like blowing your PS2 up.

No, don't release online gaming for the PS2! I am content just playing it on my own not against soemone I don't know at all (AKA a stranger). There will be loads of problems. People will download something and then get a virus then all their games will get affected and it will be chaos!

NO NO NO

Oh no ! Ps2 is going to become a PC....lol seriously will games access quicker from the HD ? I've got Oni on PC and PS2 and the PS2 version is miles faster loading as are all PS" games, and the PC is an 850mhz athlon wiht 192mb ram so its no slow machine. Think I'd rather see games stick to discs and let the hard drive be used for surfing and hardware updates. one thing about hardware updates though...HD's are not exactly the most reliable of components so I'd be wary of having any essential stuff on a HD. On my PC any important stuff is burned onto a CD.

If you do this over a normal modem it would take AGES!!!!

How fast is the PS2 DVD drive? If it's over 24 speed it's quicker to read from the DVD than from the HDD.

The dreamcast is great online but you can't do much with it except surf and play online but since the PS2 has a 40gb hard drive we'll be able to download LOADS of stuff. I heard someone say ages ago that you'll be able to buy games online and download them to your hard drive, haha no thanks mate I'd rather have the disc just incase something goes wrong.

I think we'll be able to install some parts of the games onto the hard drive for quicker access speed and to cut loading times. Also I think we'll see programs to play mp3 albums,VCD's and updates. It's gona be great.

There's no way you'll download a whole game over a modem, it would take about a week!

I admit that online gaming is fun, i've enjoyed playing Chu Chu Rocket online, but with games like TH3, i think they will have to work hard to get the lag down.

Just out of interest, did Q3 come with any online options? I know it was released a little while ago, but i was wondering if they were planning ahead.
