I've just read the one bit of news about PS2, that is going to make everyone want one. It's not MGS2 but the PS2 online capability. I personally didn't really care at the start of the PS2 if it was online or not, but after reading this article i'm really excited. First of all the Hard drive and online capabilty are going to be seperate, you don't need one to use the Other. Secondly you will be able to use the modom through a normal telephone line and not just a digital line. However the most exciting thing is how quickly it's going to arrive. Sony want the Modom in Europe by 2002 with a number of online games, and this is not an unrealistic target. The Hardware is nearly completed, and sony have combinded with AOL to create a sutible web browser. Now you may well dissmiss this saying the Dreamcat was meant to be online and look at the state of that. However their is one crucial difference, online games are already in the pipeline. Tony Hawkes 3is online as well as SOCOM Navy seals and Tribes 2 and by the end of 2002 sony hopes that all games will have an online element. Just imagine the possibilities skating round a park with someone from Germany and abuse messages scrolling on the bottom of the screen or Downloading a new car on the GT3 web site or a new weapon on the FF11 (Final Fantasy). The possibilites are endless withe the Hard drive as well hopefully ending in you being able to download whole games straight into the machine. At the end of the day this is an incredinly useful tool, but will have to be exploited by the Games companies who will have the final so, but so far things are looking good.

Lol rather you than me :)

To be honest on the DVD player I have downstairs ( Phillips one connected to a Toshiba tv ) I don't find scart adds much to the picture quality apart from on menu screens/extra screen. The actual picture quality using AV cables is v impresive. What I think is the real problem with the PS2 setup is that scart gives us the best gaming picture quality and we're all fed up of changing leads just to play DVD. Okay so if you have S Video then you're not bothered but a majority of users seem to use scart/av cables.

Is anyone actaully bothered about the picture quality or is it just the fact we have to switch leads a lot ?

From what I know of the PS2, most of it comes from web sites, the green scart picture is a hardware thing, not software. On an american website I saw there was a diagram of the PS2's insides and supposedly fixing the green picture was just a matter of soldering something - obviously this voids your warranty ! Try searching google.com for Green PS2 DVD picture and I'm sure the site is around somewhere.

If they release an upgraded driver then do you think we will get true RGB or do you believe that they actually diddnt connect it up right in the machine?

In one of the old issues of the official PS2 magazine they said Sony would release an official DVD remote for xmas 2001 which would have a disc with it to upgrade the DVD driver, this disc would also be made available free to registered PS2 owners who didn't want the remote. That was back in issue #6 or #7 I think.

However, yesterday on Gamespot.com they had news of the Japanese release of the HD unit and according to them it comes with a new version of the DVD driver that can be installed on the HD so.......lol All very confusing isn't it ? What is certain is that we will be able to upgrade the dvd driver, I dont know if there are any other drivers on the PS2 which need updates.

All my info is out of date, as i havent read a review or any PS2 news for a while, but last time i heard they had a Combo of a modem and HD, (which contradicts what you said boba) and also that it was a 5 gig HD instead of a 10 Gig. And that the modem was going to be Broadband, and SERIOUSLY fast. But now it turns out all my hopes for high speed internet access are stomped on.
Also, if it is not a combo how will u connect both the modem and the HD into the PS2? I presume they are still gonna be using the hole in the back, so if u put both in, i cant see how they would both fit, especialy if, as you say Ö=Res that it has a 40gig HD.

If you mean the 3rd party infra red DVD remotes, they do not require any upgrades to run. Its just a sensor that recieves the signals from the remote and turns them into the electrical signals equivelent to the buttons being pressed on the pad.

or did you mean something else?

Maybe but the DC is a different console which didn't need any driver upgrades.

Not the DVD because thats a media type, seeing as Sony have said there will be different versions of the PS2 drivers part of the console IS writeable to. If it was read only then theres no way any driver upgrades culd be utilised like the one Sony have said will come with the official remote control unit.

Hackers are very versetile people. Though the console is read only, you cannot be sure that hackers cannot get in.

To be honest i don't think you lot have a lot to worry about. I've been online with my DC, to surf and to play games, and i've had no problems.

If you're really worried about viruses but still want to go online, just don't get the HDD. There's no way anything you download can affect your actual PS2, it's all read only inside, nothing can get written to the chip or the DVD or anything.
