I've tried to get interested in the Xbox, give it a chance, see what it had to offer, but getting myself to like it is just not possible.

There is absolutely nothing to draw me to the console whatsoever!

Today I tried again, and went to a gaming site to read a few previews. I couldn't do it though! There was nothing being previewed that caught my eye.

When you look at a list of Nintendo previews, you know what you're looking at. You've got your Luigi's, your Metroid's and your Star Fox right there, so you might look here first. This will get you excited about the coming games, so you'll check for more.

If I go to the Xbox website I look at the pick of the games: Halo, Munch's Oddysee, NASCAR, Mad Dash Racing, Dead or Alive 3. Hardly an inspirational bunch of titles to have as the pick of the best on Microsofts very own website, is it?

It seems to me that the Xbox is not geared towards the mass market, or the average gamer, and is a more specialised machine. They really need to start promoting this to more people.

Before the PS2 was released I was made to take notice of it. I was interested in it's launch, and the games that were coming. The Xbox, doesn't do that for me.

I'm very interested in the coming of the GAMECUBE, as I know the characters, and I want to take them on to the next level of gaming, I've grown up with them, after all!

Some say that the Playstation was such a success because it was geared towards the right market. Late teens to early twenties, with a bit of money to spend. That was six years or more ago now, and these people have grown up. Some of them will now have children, but will still be interested in gaming. Are these the people that will buy the Xbox? Certainly not! They'll either get a GAMECUBE because of the Mario's and Pokemon, or they'll get a PS2 to play on themselves.

I just don't think that the Xbox will appeal to enough people. Nintendo will clean up the young end of the market, and many gamers stick with Nintendo, especially if the wave of more grown up titles delivers. Playstation arrived at the right time to serve a new age of gamers, and those that found the image of Nintendo too childish. The PS2 will sell on it's reputation, delivering quality games to a more mature audience.

But honestly, who are Xbox targeting, and will they be interested?

I will admit that the official Microsoft Website, although professionally put together is a bit STIFF. However you could argue that Nintendos officail site is aimed at Kids!

I dont think that the website is aimed at console gamers, the website is informative, functional and aimed in my view at the PC gamer. Anyone who dissagrees should read State of the X-box volume 5 on Microsofts site (Boring!).

However ignoring the official website which is aimed at the PC gamers of America, and so reflects their nerdyness! Other websites cater for X-box news that effects gamers, and apparently the X-boxs advertising campaigne will focus primarily on the games available for the machine.

TV = Mass market advertising, will probably emphasise games.
Official Website = Functional, Boring Stats that impress PC enthusiasts of America (The majority of people who visit Microsoft sites).

But I'm visiting many American sites, and it just isn't screaming at me"Look at my screenshots, download my videos."

Simply seeing the word "Metroid" can do that, and it's where Microsoft might lose out.

I've even been to the Xbox website, but find it uninspirational. I just manage to read a whole game profile, because I'm not interested.

I could, however read profiles for PS2 games before release, even though I never intended to buy one.

It seems to me that Xbox aren't even interested in me, if they aren't tailoring everything towards me (as the rest of the world should too :-) ).

Mario Kart was good fun.
WCW Wrestling was fun
Blastcorps was fun.

But they were just so few and far between, and in the meantime they offered drek.

And still charging £40-£60 for a game?

Come on, most N64 owners aren't old enough to earn, and for a console aimed at kids, that prices shouldnt be that steep.

I loved Mario, but if it's not your thing.

PAL version was too slow. Imagine the game 17% faster, that's what we were supposed to play :-(

Yep

Too many different gameplay styles, each one not deep enough! Very frustrating in places if I remember rightly!

Lylat Wars is great :-)

The problem with the N64 was always that quality games were too few and too far apart. That didn't bother me, I never had any money to play games when it was new, but I did have some great games like Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Mario Kart, and ISS early on that I enjoyed.

Lylat wars was a good game, however the fact that you had to complete certain objectives of which you were unaware in order to play the harder levels made it a game that annoyed many.

Without looking at a cheat site (or buying Nintendos official guide) only 40% of the game was playable.

Thing is this:

I think people go with what they already know.

My 1st console, proper, was a playstation.
I had an Amiga before that and was happy.
Got a playstation, watched The Saturn come and go and was perfectly content with my little grey box.
N64 - gave it a go and got burned.

Returned to PSX.
PS2 is announced, and I go hyper. Get one and am amazed.
Funny thing is, I havent played any games on it for about a month now. Mostly a DVD player for me.

I concentrate on my PC. I just enjoy the games more right now, MGS2 will be awesome, but right now nothing appeals.
I love my PC, hence I'm looking forward to the X-Box, I have an open mind on that one.

Gamecube I will not touch, ever, for Lylat Wars and my previous non-interest in my N64.

Dreamcast - it's ok, I've played on my mates one, a good little machine. But I saw what happened with the Saturn and didnt trust Sega.
Sure enough, that hit the dirt and was buried.

So I stick with my PS2 and PC.
I know these and enjoy them.

Roll on X-Box, could be good. I dont know, but going on my PC experiences, I think I'll enjoy it a lot.

(There has been an outbreak of seriousness in my posts today, sorry)

Firstly Meka_Dragon the X-box hasn’t really caught your attention yet because in The X-box isn’t going to be released over here until March 2002. As such were very much being ignored at present by Microsoft, the Nintendo hype and advertising however is slowly starting due to the release of Nintendo’s GameBoyAdvance.

I’ve seen the latest predictions for sales of the X-box, GameCube and PS2… In short the PS2 will remain the market leader at least until 2005. X-box and GameCube will by then have sold approximately 32 million units each with the Playstation2 having sold 56 million units. The X-box will do badly in Japan, but however do well in America.

What does this mean, well it probably means that the Playstation2 will be the console with the most games, and third party support. With the X-box being supported primarily by American companies and the GameCube being the favorite toy of the Japanese.

In essence this means the X-box will appeal primarily to the American market, so if you like American style Arcade games then this will be the machine for you. The X-box looks like its going to appeal to the PC gamers of America, those who want a big powerful toy that can do everything a top end PC can do without the hassle of having to upgrade to the latest graphics card every year to play the latest games. If you want top quality PC games with online connectivity as standard, and without the hassle of your conventional PC then the X-box may be your next (or your first) console.

I agree 100%.

I got an N64, with Shadows of The Empire, Mario 64, Waveracer and Goldeneye.
Maria was ok, Waveracer was ok, Goldeneye rocked, and the Star Wars one made me angry.

I had a few more games, and they were just "ok".
Then I bought Lylat Wars.

£60. Finished it 1st time in under an hour with no continues and restarts needed.

It put me off that console forever, I sold it shortly after for £100 just to get rid of it.
The games I played were just not that good (in my opinion), and Lylat Wars finished it for me.

I had a go with Nintendo, found it childish, ugly games and basically aimed at a younger market that wouldnt play as often and with any degree of skill.

Therefore I got shot of it.
And, like Meka says, I will not touch Gamecube for that reason.

I gave Nintendo a chance, they stole my money and crapped in my pocket.

Not again.

I liked Lylat Wars. I thought it was fun.

I didn't finish it on my first go though.

I believe the point that Goatboy is trying to make is that having games that remind you of a poor gaming experience, such as for Goatboy here, Lylat Wars, continued on another platform, does not make that platform attractive. In fact, it makes it an unattractive console to own.

To repeat myself again. Lylat Wars ruined the N64 for Goatboy. it ruined Nintendo games for him too, and will not consider the GAMECUBE because Starfox will be there, and might bite him again.

One bitten twice shy? Too shy shy?
