Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift

7/10

Its rubbish really. The story is pathetic and the set pieces are unbelievable (the Japanese Yakuza settling a problem with some punk kid by having a car race? I dont think so), but the only reason you would go to see this film is for the cars anyway and the races all look great. It was as fun to watch as the other two, possibly even better than #2 and there is a nice surprise at the end for fans of the series.

If you are wanting some great acting, a heart wrentching story and some brilliantly detailed drama, then this isnt for you. If you want Japanese girls in short skirts driving customised sports cars then I think you'll love it.

Harry Potter 5 ... 9/10

Saw it earlier today, with doodle. It was brilliant, despite there were mostly adults who saw it at the same time.

[S]Also, when did Daniel Radcliffe get so hot?

Die Hard 4.0 ... 8.5/10

Great film in the standard action mould - plenty of explosions, people getting shot, Kung Fu trained women getting beaten up, men getting thrown down flights of stairs on office chairs. And shed loads of CGI in this one - not enough to spoil it though.

Would have been a 9, but there really is very little in the way of good storyline - you could probably re-jig the whole film into a different order of action scenes and enjoy it just as much. But then, isn't that what these sorts of films are about? Sod it, I'll give it another 0.5 ...

John McClane for the millenium ... recommended!

The Dark

I'm not sure what was released first but this film just reeked of the film below, Silent Hill. Lead female looked quite similar actually and both have Sean Bean in them although he plays a slightly bigger part in this. General idea is: women takes daughter to see father in wales where she goes missing (sounds familiar already). I'd describe a bit more but I'd probably ruin it, it has demonic sheep though which is always a winning formula.

Saying that, it wasn't fantastic. The twist isn't what you expect which is always good as I pretty much thought I knew exactly what was going to happen. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it, but I wouldn't say don't watch it, so:

Ghost Rider 6/10

Such a flat & pale performance by Nicolas Cage in human form with a distinct feeling of "could have done better" in Ghost Rider form. :( Good dark performance of Mephistopheles by Peter Fonda but the lead baddy (Blackheart) is out-shone by two of his subordinates... Ignore the critiques & ignore the expectations of good performances by the top names appearing in the film (Sam Elliott, yeah... too little character building: boo) & you get an all-round good film.

28 Weeks Later 9/10

What a bloody great film! You do have to suspend belief at some points though, the helicopter blades in particular got a "Oh f**k off!" reaction from myself, as did

How incredibly useless the security measures were

How despite having taken over the US military, the infected still couldnt break through the glass on a Renault.

"Oh the main characters just happen to be immune"

"Oh the main characters just happened to be out of the country in the first film"

Honestly, if this wasnt such an entertaining film your eyes would be permanently rolled upwards.
I really liked the pacing, going from utter carnage to complete silence and although it takes about 40 minutes to get going, once it kicks off, everything goes to hell within a manic 10 minutes. On a personal note, seeing your home city abandoned and then forebombed was quite disconcerting, seeing as i'd been around most of the places it was filmed only 2 weeks ago.
Although its quite gory, in some aspects it doesn't match up with the first film. Somehow it never captures the menace, claustrophobia or tension of the first film. The bloodshed is generally a lot less personal and detached instead of the individual killings and prolonged gore of 28 Days. Instead you're kept more at a distance with the director preferring explosions, set-pieces, lots of running and gunfire. This is a bit more Hollywood as expected but it shouldnt detract from what is, in the end, a highly enjoyable ride.
If there is one clear message in this film, it's that no matter what you do, no matter how organised you are, no matter how many guns you've got, some little kid is going to come along, f**k everything up and cause the end of civilization. Kids must be stopped now!

Pans Labyrinth 8/10

It's a complete work of art and a great fairytale story but i absolutely wouldnt recommend it for kids. There are a couple of scenes that are quite visceral and i regret choosing to watch this while eating my tea.

Music and Lyrics 6/10

A romantic comedy with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. Nothing surprising about the characters they played. Roles we've seen them both play a million times before. Hugh Grant is a washed up 80s pop star who has to write a song and he meets Drew Barrymore who just happens to demonstrate shes good at writing lyrics....blah...blah...blah... you can guess the rest of the plot.
Basically its a competent movie but nothing special. To use an analogy, it simmers without ever reaching the boil. Its mildly funny in places but never very funny. The plot is ok but never thoroughly engaging and so on... Which is a pity because I did get the feeling it wasnt that far aware from being a good addition to the genre. Admittedly some of the movie's appeal would have been lost on me because I have no interest in watching Hugh Grant swinging his hips. :P
