In March we saw the ending of the Dreamcast’s production and sega announcing the end of an era and that it was time to go into full time software business for all companies. Well the question on everyone’s mind was if this new change was a start of a great path for sega or a tunnel to the light to heaven for the company.
As most here will know, Sega has stopped hardware business of all kind and is now making games for multi-formats because they are so good at them and could make a heap of money out of it. After the Dreamcast’s Awfully lacking sales in my opinion due to no hype and publicity they have decided to concentrate on their software of which they are famous for. It seems that the company you hate to love will be handing games out all round in the near future so hold this spot.
Now the point of this topic is to ask what would have happened if Sega did not stop hardware production and carried on with Dreamcast maybe with a new life ready to take the world by storm with huge price crashes. Well I will be measuring up both sides of this and seeing what would… or could have happened.
Well when the dreamcast originally came out I thought… “What have they done!” but soon realized how wrong I was. I think after the Saturn’s crash most people who bought the dreamcast were already big sega fans anyway. So not many people who were buying a console for the first time actually bought it. Also there were plagues of rumours that the Internet crashed all the time and that the console wouldn’t work and a lot of people certainly that I know were vigorously discouraged by this. Also they waited for a while then went to get a ps2 instead as it came out the year later. So even at the beginning at this great consoles reign it was being incorrectly judged and in my opinion that it is the worst thing that can occur when trying to impress the public with a new console on the market.
But of course things could have been very different it they had gone another way but like most things in life, we will just never know. So first up what would happen if it carried on for another year… or MORE!
**Early 2001**
Sega plan to cut the hardware of the Dc after the almost horrific sales and felt they had nothing left to do.
In a way this could have been a good thing and they could have been trying to pull in the public and it worked… but not enough.
Now here is what have could have happened.
**March 2001**
Sega see that their sales prices are worst ever and know something had to be done. But being the wise old cats they are decide to keep it going for another year, or much longer! The president of the company says that things could only get better but hwo wrong he was…
**Summer 2001**
Sega seem to have realized the DC’s loss and are now really broke to their knees but again decide to keep on going. The console is getting some response but not much and even price cuts wont do it and by now they may as well give the blooming thing away! Their games were good but The public seem to have set up a boycott against purchasing Sega products (or at least that is what the company say) altogether.
**Christmas 2001**
By now it has been creamed forever. People are already forgetting the name of it and even the gimmicks sega re putting in it just wont work. The cancelled half of their games and don’t want to bother translating them to Europe so most people have sold their cleancast… After taking a survey it is reported that second hand Saturn’s are getting better sales than this shattered old girl now.
So everything could have gone bitterly wrong for Sega and although everyone says that going into the software business was a bad idea it just goes to show that this could have happened to our dearly beloved company. In my strong opinion the console business was only a massive let down because no on trusted sega.
