Yesterday, after having played countless hours of Counter-Strike and having enjoyed every second of it, I realised something very frightening, that computer games are SO similar to drugs.
This may not seem it at first, but trust me, by the end of this thread I promise to have made you more aware. Here are just a few similarities that are clearly obvious:
* Us gamers are becoming more and more addicted to games, even old games are amazingly addictive. Take Worms for example, or even Civilization II, they are so addictive I think I spent a total of a few weeks playing them. The similarity here is so clear I don't even have to explain, for those of you who still dont see, drugs are known to be addictive, yes?!
* Games damage our health so much. I think physically more than mentally as I don't believe games make you psycho killers from childhood. Our eyes are so affected we dont even realise it until we all end up with glasses or after we play for three hours and look away from the screen our eyes hurt like crazy. In other ways, drugs also damage our health A LOT as you all know, so another similarity.
* We become so deparate to buy the games that we buy them through the black market and it has become more evident that the issue of piracy is now widely spread. These games are all illegal and copying games is against the law. We rather use our money to buy new games than buy new clothes or something else other than compuetr stuffs. Same with drugs, most drugs are illegal, except things like aspirin. Drug takers go into a lot of trouble getting their drugs through illegal ways and drug dealers, which is a bit like the black market of the games industry.
* We are completly cut off from the outside world while playing games, and we forget about many things, like our family, and so leading to a divorce. With drugs, they also mess up your life big time creating a life of misery.
* If games are taken away from us we become very frustrated and angry, and we'll do anything in our power to get them back. Same with drugs, if they are taken away your body fails to respond and you are messed up basically.

I would like to stop there and i hope i didn't freak anyone out that much!!
And yet, I'm sure after reading this thread everyone will go back to playing games as usual for hours and hours, sigh

The thing is, games aren't 'physically' addictive in any way, unlike some drugs, which umbalance the chemicals in your body and simulate a physical 'need' for more

What, you mean you don't follow the safety instructions on the box? ;)
Playing games like this is no more harmful than watching telly. It also doesn't harm your eyes any where near as much as, for example, reading - which is incredibly bad for your eyes.

We don't get games illegally because we're 'desperate' for them, but because they're cheaper. If i were to buy smuggled razor blades I wouldn't try to liken it to the drugs market.

Up to a certain age, you don't buy your own clothes anyway. Beyond that, it's open to debate. I'd strongly disagree that I buy games to go without clothes, or anything else for that matter. I suspect the majority are with me on this one.

Have to refer this one to Meka ;)

Just who exactly reacts like that??
I for one can go fr up to 3 month without feeling the need to play games. (I was forced to do it once) I love games and they shape a large part of my homelife, but I'm not addicted to them. I find them fun and usually play for about an hour or two each day, but I could easily cut that down to half an hour a day. No problem whatsoever... except when I've got new game. When I do I'll just play it for 6 hours staright, go to bed and have my fingers twitch (A sympton of too much gameplaying... bed wetting is another one although I've never sufered it) I'll then get up in the morning, go to school, come back home, slap in the cartridge and then play for 4 hours. Then 3 hours. Then 2 hours, and then it'll stay there until I complete it.
