As a PS2 owner you will almost certainly be getting GTA: San Andreas and GT4 is very likely, although more for the car fans out there.
But it isn't as clear cut on the Gamecube.
I don't mean there isn't a big hitter because there is. What I mean is Nintendo are catering for the big picture. They are catering for everyone.
I'm not going to say Nintendo are the best. I'm not saying Nintendo will get to the top spot. Nor am I saying that they'll out sell the opposition. I just imagine that Nintendo won't have this "rotten" Christmas, some of you earthlings are predicting.
My reason is thus. Halo 2 is a sequel to the game that sold the X-box. Almost 100% of X-box owners will get it but will it attract as large a crowd as the original? Some yes, but as many? Certainly not. It will hit the top spot but it may also damage the X-box image. People already see the console as a FPS system with a few added racers and adventure titles. Halo 2 does not change that. And if you don't like FPS's... then why get an X-box?
The PS2 is in the same boat, both the games Sony are realising have pretty much done all the selling it's going to do. It is also appealing to a narrow market and Sony have suffered a big loss with Pro evo going to the X-box.
Now Nintendo's games are also sequels... but these games aren't commercial... and they aren't as well known.... and they haven't finished selling Gamecubes.
For starters. For those pure at heart Nintendo fans, we have Pikmin 2. A game that has a whiff of Mario, the magic of Zelda and the polish of Metroid. Nintendo at their very best. It will please the fan base and many a Nintendo fan will buy a copy.
For the Kids, a market left untouched by Sony and Microsoft this Christmas, and when I say kids I mean kids... I mean 6,7,8,9... actual children. Paper Mario 2, a game that is fun to play for adults but is almost 100% aimed at Children.
Metroid Prime has been given a second chance to impress. The original sold well but not even in the same league as Halo (although it did get a higher chart position) or GTA... a game that sold some Gamecube's. But unlike Halo its one week success faded away. Adult gamers, bored of all the Halo hype... potentially dissappointed by Halo 2 (with all the hype how does it hope to live up to expectations).
And then Donkey Konga. This game is pure Christmas novalty waiting to take off. Again where is the silly party game this Christmas on the rival formats? Nintendo almost exclusivly have these type of games.
Before I get assaulted for my Nintendo bashing here I know Nintendo aren't going to win. Metroid Prime 2 and Tales of Symphonia are a great FPS and RPG respectivly but commercially they can't hope to topple Halo 2 and Fable.
But Nintendo's trump card is with the smaller games... Pikmin 2... Paper Mario 2... Donkey Konga. These games have next to no competition.
As a Nintendo fan I'll be loving Pikmin 2, playing Paper Mario 2 with my little brother, enjoying Donkey Konga with a beer and 3 mates... oh and getting in some Metroid Prime time (which hopefully with a Christmas release will enjoy a larger fan base).
As an X-box owner I'll be playing Halo 2 online and I'll shoot some people in GTA on the PS2... again.
See my point in regards of width of appeal?
Maybe "FOR EVERYONE" isn't such a bad idea.
If it was, it's quite a stunning revelation
Look out for Metroid Prime 2 this Christmas.
You'll be surprised.
As for Christmas, I'd rather have a GC.
Halo doesn't interest me, and Fable - behind the hype - doesn't look so incredible.
GTA sounds crap, as every new idea they've come up with just plain sucks. Hate GT.
About 90% of games I want are on the GC, in fact.
Only Ace Combat 5 stands proud on any other system.
No doubt people will buy their PS2s back (that MUST be why they keep selling) for GTA and Pro Evo.
Metroid Prime 2 and Pikmin 2 don't seem to me to be games that people who haven't played the first 2 games would want, to be honest. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I really don't think any of the GC lineup this Christmas is enough to sell consoles. We'll have to wait for Resi 4 and Zelda for that, because THOSE are the GCs Halo 2 and Fable.
Not every Nintendo owner will get Paper mario 2... the kids will...
Not every Nintendo owner will get Metroid Prime 2, the hardcore and adults will.
Not Every Nintendo owner will get Pikmin 2... most will.
Not every Nintendo owner will get Donkey Konga.... etc... etc...
Surly the GTA and Halo fans already have an X-box.
