I side with reaper thats what I did, so now instead of buying a new case video card etc. I ended up with the first half of my 60GB RAID setup.

Depends how you define "class" and "cheap"..my new 1ghz, 512mb ram, 17" monitor, geforce 2 is costing me £400 or so, but only because I'm salvaging some old parts.I never buy branded pcs now, building my own lets me get rid off all the useless extras I'll never need and get the exact spec I want.

Buy one from somewhere which builds them from scratch using top notch components. Be aware that the motherboard is one of the most important parts of a PC, and don't be shy of spending about £800, without any bells or whistles!!

Sorry SR, but I just do not rate package PCs at all, no matter how good the MAXXs look!!

Dare I advertise on the boards...don't think I do actually. Cheapest I've seen RAM is 256mb for £28 - generic, but usually Kingston or Crucial.

If you want to know, e-mail me, [email protected], I don't want to advertise the site here.

You're K6-2, will not go much faster than it already is, without taking a great risk of overheating (believe me I know!!). The K6-2 motherboards do not take much in the way of high end graphics cards any more, so upping your set up to a Duron/Thunderbird wouldn't be too bad. I would hold off on an upgrade at the moment though as the new set of Athlon/Duron processors are on the horizon.

Well, the reason your games run like that may not be down to the processor alone - check your ram and video card too. If you do want to overclock your cpu, ventrue in to the bios (usually foundby pressing delete while your pc is just starting to boot up), and look for options called CPU clock multiplier, and CPU clock frequency, or suchlike. Adjusting these affects the spped that your processor runs at - for example, a 200mhz machine may have a 66mhz clock frequency and a 3x multiplier - 3x66=198mhz, rounded to 200.

This is a risky operation; check your motherboard manual for information on what the motherboard itself can handle, and make sure you have sufficient cooling - for example, a heatsink and decent fan, secured with arctic silver. If you experience any problems, set it back to how it was, and don't try to push it too far, you can cause permenant damage to the processor.

Of course, the simpler solution is just to buy a new processor, K6-2 is aging now, and even overclocking it wont get you great performance - you can pick up a Duron 800 for £50 or so, and they can hit 1ghz with appropriate cooling.
