I was told the 550 only needed S7.

AMD K6-2 processors do not come above 400Mhz on a 66hz bus speed. So yes, the K6-2 550 comes on a 100mhz bus speed. The core voltage of the faster and newer processors was also changed, so anyone wanting one would have o make sure their board has an option to manually set the core voltage of the CPU so they don't blow it up!!

Presumably a k6-2 550 would require SS7 then... 5.5 x 100mhz seems more likely than, 8.5 x 66mhz, without some unlocking and serious cooling.

Super Socket 7 supports processors with 100hz bus, Socket 7 was only 66hz.

I've never been totally clear on the difference between socket 7 and super socket 7, but it was my understanding that all K6's over a certain speed needed SS7, higher bus speed or something..

My PC came with a 333mhz in a Socket 7. You can fit any chip in that is Socket 7, IE a 550mhz AMD K-6 2.

How do you get a K6-2 into a socket7 motherboard, that sounds like fast CPU from where Im sitting. I have a 200Mhz intel in a socket 7 motherboard.

K6-2 motherboards are Socket 7. The highest this goes to is 550mhz, which is not that bad. Coupled with a good graphics card (3DFX Voodoo 5 is the best PCI card I know of) you should be fine. Try more RAM as well.

If you want higher than 550mhz you need a new motherboard, which is costly. Expect to pay £150 + including installation.

Overclocking is categorically unadvised. Do it if you want but you'll get no sypathy here if you blow up your CPU.
